The Deckhand plays a critical role in the safe and efficient operation of tow and fleet activities, and other maritime duties while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and operational excellence.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently build and break tows, maintain fleet integrity, and ensure barges are properly secured
- Follow all company policies, safety standards, environmental requirements, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations
- Respond to emergencies and participate in required safety drills, including man overboard and fire drills
- Perform vessel maintenance, including cleaning, scraping, painting, and changing fuel, oil, and filters
- Handle lines and rigging during tow building, docking, and barge movement activities
- Use proper knots, tying procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for barge handling
- Communicate effectively with vessel personnel regarding barge movements, distances, and operational needs
- Complete all required training and assist with onboarding and training new team members
- Maintain proper placement and stowage of equipment and perform general dock and terminal housekeeping duties
- Work safely in all weather conditions, wear required PPE, and maintain reliable attendance, including rotational schedules and overtime as needed
- Ability to pass training and required testing
