Special Transportation Driver

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, employees operate a WCS vehicle on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may participate with the fullest possible advantage from the education of the school system. Work involves performing required pre- and post-trip inspections; obeying all traffic laws; following safety regulations and standards for North Carolina vehicles; maintaining discipline of students assigned to the route; completing required reports; and securing the assigned vehicle at the conclusion of each run or route. The employee must exercise professionalism and courtesy when interacting with parents/guardians, students, and school personnel. This is a part-time position of approximately 22 hours per week with partial benefits, including prorated annual and sick leave and prorated holiday pay. The employee will be responsible for the morning and afternoon routes.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs required pre- and post-trip inspections and documents inspections as required by Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
• Reports mechanical defects or vehicle failures to the Transportation Department.
• Operates WCS vehicles in compliance with all applicable traffic laws and regulations.
• Reports accidents as required by WCS procedures and remains at the scene until released by the on-scene transportation supervisor.
• Maintains responsibility for students aboard the bus in the event of an accident, including determining the existence and extent of injuries and maintaining passenger safety.
• Maintains appropriate student discipline while operating the assigned route.
• Secures the assigned vehicle at the conclusion of each run or route, including:
• • Parking the vehicle properly.
  • Conducting a visual inspection for damage and remaining passengers.
  • Securing windows and doors.
• Maintains acceptable and professional relationships with parents/guardians, students, and school personnel.
• Maintains a clean vehicle.
• Completes all required reports and documentation.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school graduation preferred, with experience transporting people preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
• Class B CDL with S and P endorsements preferred, but not required.
• Basic knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) preferred, but not required.
• Satisfactory motor vehicle/driving record.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to operate a vehicle safely, including the ability to quickly decelerate the vehicle and firmly apply the brake in an emergency situation and rapidly turn the steering wheel when necessary.
• Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are consistent with Medium Work.
• Must have sufficient hearing ability to distinguish warning sounds, including horns, screeching tires, sirens, grade-crossing alarms, and train whistles. Hearing a forced whispered voice in the better ear at a distance of five feet is considered adequate hearing.

• Ability to speak and communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, school personnel, and supervisors.

• Ability to conduct required vehicle inspections and identify and report observable mechanical defects or failures.
• Ability to maintain appropriate student discipline and a safe environment while operating the vehicle.

POSITION INFORMATION

Position Type: Part-Time Driver
Approximate Hours: 20 hours per week

Approximate Work Hours: 5:30-7:30 am

3:30-5:30 pm

Monday-Friday

Salary: Non-Commercial Driver’s License $16.55 per hour

Class B CDL w/ S & P Endorsement $19.12 per hour

Benefits: Partial benefits, including prorated annual and sick leave
