SAFE: Stand Against Firearms Endangerment is a collaborative program between SafeHouse Center and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office (WCPO). The SAFE Community Liaison is a point-of-contact for members of the community to provide information about intimate-partner violence. Specifically, the Community Liaison will provide information about (1) intimate-partner violence dynamics and their connection to gun violence; (2) increase knowledge of, and accessibility to, various options that intimate-partner violence victims have available (e.g., PPOs, Extreme Risk Protection Orders; criminal processes); and ultimately (3) prevent domestic violence-related gun violence.

Michigan State Police awarded funding for SafeHouse Center and WCPO to implement community education and direct advocacy services to prevent domestic violence-related gun violence. The Community Liaison will play a central role in community outreach, developing programming, and delivering the community education throughout Washtenaw County.

We are looking for an individual with strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills to provide survivor-centered, empowerment-based community outreach support.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

  • Answer (via phone, email, and/or in person) community questions related to ERPOs, PPOs, and IPV prevention.
  • Assist Washtenaw County residents with Personal Protection Order and Extreme Risk Protection Order petitions and ensure questions are answered about the filing process.
  • Help design, develop, and produce training curriculum, awareness, and outreach materials. Create and update training curriculum as needed for varying audiences.
  • Distribute printed media (brochures, flyers, business cards) to community members, answering questions about the SAFE Program and IPV/gun violence prevention.
  • Provide support for verbal, written, and visual presentations on domestic violence and gun violence prevention-related topics for educational institutions and community organizations.
  • Attend community events, serving as liaison for SAFE and answering questions and providing resources as needed as a representative of the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and SafeHouse Center.
  • Make ongoing efforts to identify new opportunities to develop and expand relationships with community partners and leaders.

Working Environment & Requirements:

  • This position is based at the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and primarily works in an office environment.
  • This position requires the ability to travel to different locations in the county in own vehicle.
  • This position requires flexibility in scheduling and job function as some events may take place outside of typical business hours (i.e. Saturday or Sunday).
  • This position requires a minimum age of 21 and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent of 2 years of professional experience. Lived experience will also be considered on a case-by-case basis for meeting requirements.
  • Exhibit a commitment to reducing intimate partner violence in the community.
  • Skilled in interpersonal communication, teamwork, and public speaking.
  • Ability to use initiative, think independently, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
  • Previous experience working effectively with people from diverse racial, economic, and cultural backgrounds is preferred.

Compensation:

  • $24.03/hour, maximum 40 hours per week (hours may vary)
