JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, works collaboratively on environmental programs including household hazardous waste collection and sorting, events, and County Cleanup Days. Washtenaw County has a household hazardous waste program which operates weekdays and select Saturdays April through November. Frequent Saturday work is expected. Weekdays this position often reports to the HHW Center (10843 Five Mile Rd, Northville, MI) in Salem Township. Saturdays this position will report primarily to the Washtenaw County Service Center (705 North Zeeb, Ann Arbor, MI) and will report to various locations within the County for events such as the County Cleanup Days.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Tasks:
Assists with collections and events, accepting appointments, administering surveys, traffic control, counting donations and other duties associated with program success.
Safely help customers by unloading hazardous materials from vehicles and transfer to appropriate containers.
Maintain, organize and track inventory of personal protective equipment including flushing emergency eyewash and shower.
- Supports problem solving when challenges arise. Responds appropriately to emergency situations during public collection events.
Non-Essential Tasks:
Occasionally provides program support to environmental programs including School Recycling Program, Zero Waste Program, Waste Knot, composting programs, waste reduction programs and other materials management projects.
Records activities and metrics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to always be courteous to members of the public
Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and work well in a team setting.
Learns and maintains comprehensive knowledge of hazardous waste regulations, environmental health, and safety standards.
Ability to safely handle household hazardous waste, wear proper personal protective equipment, learn and apply knowledge of material hazard classifications.
Ability to operate equipment including a pallet jack, emergency eyewash and shower, and fans
Basic computer functions
- Proficiency with technology, including Office 365, printers, and scanners

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
Obtain HAZWOPER 24 or 40-Hour certification and DOT Hazmat certificate required within six (6) months of hire. The County will coordinate and fund the trainings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in normal office and field settings, including ability to make repetitive movements, and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
Duties require sufficient mobility and capability to perform labor-intensive activities in a field setting.
Duties may require employee to exert 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Must be able to lift 60 lbs.

EDUCATION
Possession of a High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
1 year prior experience handling hazardous waste is preferred.
1 year customer service is preferred.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to attend work at various locations within Washtenaw County on time. Ability to work in various weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain and snow.
