PURPOSE STATEMENT


Washougal High School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head Coach who views sports as a vital extension of the classroom. We are looking for a leader who is committed to the holistic development of student-athletes, prioritizing the cultivation of life skills, emotional intelligence, and personal integrity alongside athletic technical proficiency. The ideal candidate will foster a program culture where every student-athlete feels valued, challenged, and empowered to grow both as a competitor and as a person.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES & PHILOSOPHY

  • Purpose-Driven Leadership: Build a culture that emphasizes hard work and sportsmanship as foundational tools for lifelong success.
  • Student-Centered Mentorship: Foster a supporting environment that prioritizes player development and the well-being of the individual over a “win-at-all-costs” mentality.
  • Holistic Growth: Advance player development by integrating mental performance, resilience training, and character education into daily practices.
  • Community Stewardship: Lead the program to compete at a high level while serving as a positive role model for the Greater St Helens League (GSHL) and the local community

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Effectively demonstrate coaching skills at practices and contests.
  • Formulate program goals and objectives for the coming sport season.
  • Keep abreast of new knowledge, innovative ideas, and techniques by attendance at clinics, workshops and reading in the field and encouraging assistant coaches to do the same.
  • Model age appropriate, sportsmanship-like behavior, and maintain educationally appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Teach student-athletes to perform sound, safe fundamental techniques.
  • Report any unsafe conditions to the facilities administrator and complete work orders in a timely manner to correct safety hazards.
  • Follow district policies, site procedures, WIAA rules and the WIAA Coaches Code of Ethics.
  • Have an understanding of rules and regulations regarding the sport as presented in the WIAA Handbook.
  • Conduct annual meetings in accordance with WIAA guidelines to communicate expectations of coaching staff, players and parents as they relate to an educationally sound interscholastic extra curricular program.
  • Keep abreast of rules and rule changes of the sport.
  • Assist the Athletic Director as needed, in carrying out the "Special Duties", as outlined.
  • Implement proper procedures for out-of-season practices according to WIAA and Washougal Athletic Policy.
  • Be or become a member of professional organizations such as the Washington State Coaches' Association.
  • Provide accurate information needed to compile eligibility lists and other reports.
  • Explain all regulations of the Athletic Code. Clarify to athletes the letter award policy.
  • Arrange for a systematic issuance of school equipment.
  • Implement "Athletic Standards" as outlined in the Athletic Policy.
  • Provide information for transportation and game management.
  • Assume responsibility for constant care of equipment and facilities being used.
  • Follow procedures with the Athletic Director when purchasing equipment.
  • Assume supervisory control over all phases of teams in the program, this included traveling to and from all events with the team.
  • Organize and schedule practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athletes' greatest potential.
  • Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner as outlined in the Athletic Code.
  • See that building regulations are understood and enforced.
  • Emphasize safety precautions and be aware of best training and injury procedures.
  • Conduct oneself and one’s team in an ethical manner during practice and contests.
  • Report a summary of all contests and provide any publicity information that will aid the program and athletes.
  • Instruct the players concerning rules and rule changes, new knowledge, and innovative ideas/techniques.
  • Teach sportsmanship.
  • Arrange for the systemic return of all school equipment and hold the athlete responsible for all equipment not returned.
  • Arrange the awards banquet, including letter awards, and special awards.
  • Clean, store, and inventory all equipment. Recommend equipment needed to be purchased or repaired.
  • Be concerned with the care and maintenance of the facility by making recommendations concerning additions and improvements.
  • Recommend equipment needed to be purchased or repaired.
  • Submit recommendations for next year's schedule.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stopping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 20% walking and 70% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive program that emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Design and execute effective practice plans that cater to individual and team needs, ensuring each player's growth and potential are maximized.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive team culture where respect, hard work, and dedication are paramount.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to student-athletes both on and off the court, promoting academic excellence and personal responsibility.
  • Collaborate with assistant coaches to coordinate team strategies, game plans, and player evaluations
  • Communicate effectively with players, parents, school administration, and the community to build support and enthusiasm for the program.
  • Attend all team practices, games, and related events, demonstrating a strong presence and leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Previous coaching experience at the high school level or above, preferably with a successful track record in developing student-athletes.
  • Strong knowledge of basketball strategy, techniques, and current coaching trends.
  • Commitment to the principles of transformational coaching, focusing on the holistic development of student-athletes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate young athletes.
  • Uphold high ethical standards and promote sportsmanship, respect, and fair play.

Additional Information: This is a part-time, stipend-based position for the duration of the season. The successful candidate must pass a background check and meet all requirements set forth by our school district.
