Position Information

Under direction, supervises and manages professional clinical workers in the areas of child protective services, adult services, senior services, or juvenile services; and performs related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in the Human Services Agency. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies throughout the County as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of full-time experience performing clinical case work AND a master’s degree from accredited college or university in social work, marriage and family therapy, counseling, psychology or closely related field AND licensure in the State of Nevada to practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Marriage and Family Therapist or a Clinical Professional Counselor.

License Or Certificate

  • License to practice in area of assignment is required at the time of application (licensure must be as a practitioner, not as an intern) and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

The Ideal Candidate

Juvenile Services Department

The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and case management to at-risk adolescents and their families, as well as knowledge of mental health services and other community resources, including how to effectively navigate them. This candidate will oversee a mental health services unit for both detention and probation services within the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center. They will provide oversight and support to therapists in detention who deliver supportive therapy, crisis therapy, and assessments to youth and may also supervise therapists assigned to a community-based therapy program that upholds high-quality assurance standards. Additionally, this individual will provide guidance, supervision, and training to Juvenile Services staff. Prior mental health supervisory experience is required.

Human Services Agency – Housing and Homeless Services Division

The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to children and families, to include crisis services and response, and will lead a team of licensed Mental Health Counselor staff, clinical interns, and Case Workers, offering training, guidance, and supervision, as well as direct client services. This position will be responsible for taking part in and leading agency teams and initiatives, including program implementation, data collection, and reporting on a Local, State, and Federal level. The selected candidate will provide oversight and guidance to the Mental Health Counselors, clinical interns, and caseworkers making up our clinical services team for Child Protective Services and/or Children’s Mobile Crisis Response Team. An ideal candidate will be bilingual in Spanish, be a Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor or Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Intern or Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor or Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor.

Conditions of Employment

Juvenile Services

The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position located at the Juvenile Services Department is not covered by a bargaining unit.

Juvenile Services employees will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).

Juvenile Services will need first aid/CPR certification at the time of appointment.

After the interview process, top candidates will go through a background investigation process that includes:

  • Complete and submit a Personal History Statement and pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Submit a set of fingerprints.

Human Services Agency (current vacancy)

The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position located at the Human Services Agency is covered by the Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) - Supervisory. Certain positions in the Human Services Agency have access to criminal justice agency systems including NCIC and CJIS. All felony convictions, gross misdemeanor and certain misdemeanors will prohibit that employee from working with NCIC and CJIS criminal justice systems. Additionally, Human Services Agency will run a background check via the Child Abuse and Neglect Registry.

Additional Conditions (Human Services Agency)

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

Human Services Agency employees will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. What Happens Next

  • After your application is screened, you will be notified via the email you provided whether you have met the minimum requirements for the position. Those applicants who do not meet the qualifications have one (1) business day to file an appeal and request a review of their qualifications.
  • Applicants who meet the minimum requirements for the Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position will be placed on an unranked eligible list. The examination is waived for this recruitment in accordance with the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160.

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160 - waiver of examination. The director of human resources may waive examination for those classes requiring specific training, education, certification, licensure, experience or when there are an insufficient number of qualified candidates.
