Provides advanced professional nursing care which includes the delivery of primary health care, diagnosis and treatment of common medical conditions, minor surgery and invasive procedures, health education and counseling; and performs other related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current, part-time vacancy in the Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH). The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time and part-time vacancies as they occur.

This classification currently exists in several departments of Washoe County to include Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH), District Attorney's - Washoe County Child Advocacy Center (CAC), and the Human Services Agency (HSA). 

The current vacancy is a permanent, 36-hour a week position. The incumbent will receive full Health Benefits. Vacation and sick leave accruals, retirement and longevity pay will be prorated.

The Northern Nevada Public Health Family Planning & STI Clinic provides accessible, patient-centered reproductive and sexual health services to individuals across our community. Our clinic's mission is to reduce barriers to care, support informed decision-making, and promote overall health and well­being through education, prevention, and high-quality clinical services. 

The APRN in this division delivers comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care, including contraceptive counseling and management, well-person exams, pregnancy testing and options counseling, STI testing and treatment, PrEP services, and management of common gynecologic concerns. The APRN collaborates closely with nursing, community health workers, disease investigators, and community partners to ensure patients receive timely, compassionate, and evidence-based care. 

Our clinic plays a vital role in improving reproductive health outcomes and reducing health disparities. The APRN helps advance this mission by providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive care and by supporting public health initiatives that strengthen the health, autonomy, and resilience of individuals and families throughout Northern Nevada. 

More about the APRN in the District Attorney's - CAC Division:
The Washoe County Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in the District Attorney's office, through a coordinated Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) approach, provides direct services to child abuse victims and their non-offending caregivers. Here at the Washoe County CAC, we provide advocacy, individual treatment and therapy, forensic interviewing and medical services. The Washoe County CAC is a child-friendly facility in which law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocacy professionals work together to investigate abuse, help children heal from abuse, and hold offenders accountable.

The mission of the Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) is to promote the health, safety and well-being of children, adults and seniors who are vulnerable to abuse, neglect and exploitation. We provide an array of protective and supportive services to families and individuals to enhance their quality of life by ensuring they are optimizing their self-reliance and self-sufficiency, as we strive to have a strengthened, safe, and thriving community.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate of arts or bachelor's degree in nursing and sufficient advanced, specialized nursing training to qualify for State of Nevada certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

License or Certificate

  • A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nevada is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification. 
  • Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with the Nevada State Board of Nursing is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
  • For positions within Northern Nevada Public Health: A Practitioner Dispensing Certification with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
  • For positions within Northern Nevada Public Health: An Active Prescribing - D license with the Nevada State Board of Nursing is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
  • For positions within the Washoe County Child Advocacy Center in the District Attorney’s office:  Sixteen (16) hours of formal didactic training per National Children’s Alliance (NCA) requirements in the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse is required at the time of appointment. 
  •  For positions within the Washoe County Child Advocacy Center in the District Attorney’s office: Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE-P) certification per NCA requirements is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.  SANE-P certification includes forty (40) hours of formal didactic training in the medical evaluation of child sexual abuse and completion of a competency based clinical preceptorship.

  • Have fluent Spanish-Bilingual skills (oral and written), depending on area of assignment
  • Additional ideal candidate criteria may be required for future Countywide positions, depending on area of assignment

  • Have experience in Sexual and Reproductive Health
  • Demonstrate positive and professional interpersonal and communication skills consistently

The Washoe County Nurses Association (WCNA) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse position.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment. 

For NNPH: Selected candidates are required to meet the Health District (NNPH) immunization requirements and complete 2 TB Skin Tests at time of appointment, or provide documentation of a prior QuantiFERON test done within the last 12 months. 

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work. 

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification.  Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

2. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse position will be placed on an unranked eligible list. The examination is waived for this recruitment in accordance with the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160. 

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160 - waiver of examination. The director of human resources may waive examination for those classes requiring specific training, education, certification, licensure, experience or when there are an insufficient number of qualified candidates. 

3. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be placed on an unranked eligible list for the department to interview upon the close of the recruitment. For continuous/open until filled recruitments, candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be referred for an interview on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
