The Opportunity:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Pullman, WA. We seek applicants with specialties in numerical analysis and scientific computing, with strong connections to machine learning and artificial intelligence. While all areas of expertise broadly within theoretical and applied areas of computational mathematics will be considered, preference may be given to applicants whose work bridges theory and applications in data analysis, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, or optimization, and they are especially encouraged to apply. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2026.

Job Duties: The successful candidate will develop a vigorous research program, mentor graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in numerical analysis and scientific computing with applications in areas such as optimization, data analysis, discrete mathematics, and artificial intelligence, as well as positively contribute to the department, college, and University. A typical teaching load for a tenure-track faculty member is 3 or 4 courses per year.

Annual Salary: $85,000-$95,000 per nine-month academic year. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Required Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
  
• Demonstrated excellence, or strong potential for excellence, in research and teaching,
  
• Strong potential or evidence of the ability to contribute to the development of computational methods in mathematics, and
  
• Strong potential or evidence of the ability to contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations.
  
• Expertise in an area that supports existing or emerging department strengths, such as numerical linear algebra, optimization, computational methods in machine learning and artificial intelligence, data-driven methods in scientific computing, discrete and combinatorial algorithms, and high-performance computing and large-scale algorithms.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Potential for or experience with writing grant proposals to funding agencies.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Washington State University is one of only two mathematics Ph.D. granting departments in Washington State. We are committed to teaching at all levels and to excellence in research and scholarship. Our undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with four options: actuarial sciences, applied mathematics, theoretical mathematics, and secondary mathematics teaching. We also offer, jointly with Computer Science, a Bachelor of Science degree in Data Analytics. The department offers graduate programs leading to a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy in each of mathematics and statistics, with various options for each degree. In particular, we offer the MS in Mathematics with a Mathematics Teaching Option, a PhD in Mathematics with Education Emphasis option, a Graduate Certificate in Teaching College Mathematics, as well as Applied Math options for both the MS and PhD.
