The Firearms Background Division currently has 12 available Program Specialist 2 positions. This recruitment will be used to fill multiple vacancies.
The Firearms Background Division (FBD) is a brand new division established by RCW 43.43.580 to be a centralized point of contact for firearms background checks. The division operates the Secure Automated Firearms E-Check (SAFE) system which interfaces with state and national databases, providing firearm dealers a simple, easy to use interface to submit firearm background checks. The division is comprised of two sections:
The Firearms Background Division (FBD) is a brand new WSP division established by RCW 43.43.580 to be a centralized point of contact for firearms background checks. The division operates the Secure Automated Firearms E-Check (SAFE) system which interfaces with state and national databases, providing firearm dealers a simple, easy to use interface to submit firearm background checks. The Division is comprised of two sections:
- The Firearms Transfer Support Unit (FTSU), responsible for handling background checks submitted by firearm dealers
- The Research and Appeals Unit (RAU), responsible for handling appeals of individuals denied a purchase/transfer of a firearm, as well as, background checks requiring additional in-depth research

Duties
- Conduct firearm background check adjudications, which directly impact a person’s constitutional right to possess a firearm, which includes:
- Interpreting Washington state and federal laws to make a determination.
- Contacting other criminal justice agencies regarding information found or needed.
- Make independent determinations to overturn or uphold original background check denials.
- Provide technical assistance to firearm dealers using SAFE.
- Perform required of Denied Firearm Applicants, Involuntary Treatment Act, and Voluntary Waiver of Firearm Rights records
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalency.
Valid, unrestricted Washington state driver's license.
Moderate to advanced level oral and written communication skills.
Moderate to advanced level time management and organizational skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, and Excel).
Ability to work irregular shift hours (i.e., weekends, holidays, modified, flex, or overtime shifts as needed).
