The Opportunity
As a Facilities Maintenance Technician, you will help keep the state’s public health laboratory safe, reliable, and fully operational. Your on-site work supports the agency’s mission by ensuring the facility, equipment, and mechanical systems perform at their best so staff, partners, and visitors can focus on critical public health work. This role is hands-on, essential, and central to keeping the lab running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform corrective maintenance on building systems, equipment, and facilities
- Complete work orders for carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and general repairs
- Support room setups, furniture moves, cleaning, and grounds care
- Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, steam, hydraulic, pneumatic, and safety systems
- Replace parts, filters, belts, and other components as part of planned maintenance
- Diagnose issues in laboratory and building systems using digital and analytic tools
- Maintain mechanical spaces and equipment through cleaning and upkeep
- Handle materials and supplies with pallet jacks, lifts, and other equipment
- Operate a state vehicle for maintenance related tasks
- Monitor building automation systems and communicate alarms or needed adjustments
- Your work directly supports a facility that protects public health statewide

- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Work Setting, Including Hazards
- Incumbent is required to work on-site in the lab due to the nature of the work/duties.
- Requires constant movement throughout the buildings and grounds.
- Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder; it is expected of incumbent to climb high ladders over 10ft.
- Frequently moves equipment weighing over 50lbs.
- Occasionally requires exterior work in inclement weather removing ice and snow, controlling flooding, and working on the roof in all types of weather; it is expected of incumbent to work outside in inclement weather (extreme heat, cold and wet weather).
- Requires working with mechanical equipment and performing minor electrical work.
- Requires working on lab equipment, i.e., Fume hoods, Biosafety cabinets; and working with fuels and chemicals.
- Requires incumbent to wear a respirator and work in a highly contained laboratory- biosafety level 3.
- Monday to Friday 8AM to 5PM.
- Occasional travel in state. When traveling for work, incumbent may travel alone or with another person, may stay overnight, or for several days and nights, in/or out of state. When driving for state business, the incumbent must be able to legally operate a state or privately-owned vehicle; OR provide alternative transportation while on state business.
- All primary mechanical and diagnostic tools are provided by the agency.
- Incumbent interacts with internal lab staff, contractors, trades people, equipment representatives and other external customers on a daily basis, in person and/or at times by phone or via computer.
- Classes recommended as needed (funded by employer): Electrical Basics/Troubleshooting, Pump Maintenance and Repair, Building Operator Certification, Safety training, PHL required training.
- Representation: This position is covered by a bargaining unit for which the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is the exclusive representative.
