Position Summary

The Registered Nurse – Acute Dialysis reports to the Nurse Manager and is responsible for delivering safe, high-quality nursing care to patients requiring acute dialysis services in the hospital setting. This role completes patient assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and documentation of care for patients receiving dialysis treatment, while responding appropriately to changes in clinical condition. The RN collaborates with providers and the interdisciplinary team to support effective treatment, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and quality outcomes. This position may also assist with staff orientation, patient and family education, and the clinical supervision of students or new team members as assigned.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive patient assessments before, during, and after dialysis treatment, including review of vital signs, laboratory data, fluid status, vascular access, and overall clinical condition.
  • Provides acute dialysis nursing care in accordance with physician orders, established protocols, and standards of practice, using sound clinical judgment and safe nursing techniques.
  • Initiates, monitors, and discontinues dialysis treatments while observing for patient tolerance, treatment effectiveness, and potential complications, and escalates concerns promptly to the appropriate provider.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and complete documentation of assessments, treatments, interventions, patient response, and communication with the care team.
  • Collaborates with nephrologists, hospitalists, bedside staff, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care, support treatment goals, and promote continuity of care.
  • Assists with patient and family education related to dialysis treatment, plan of care, safety precautions, and follow-up needs appropriate to the patient’s condition.
  • Supports a safe care environment through adherence to infection prevention practices, equipment safety standards, departmental procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • May assist with orientation of new staff, supervision of students, and cross-coverage or floating to other areas when qualified and competent to do so.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Licensure and Certifications: Current Arkansas Registered Nurse license required. Current CPR certification required. Valid driver’s license and auto insurance required, if applicable to assigned duties.
  • Experience: Acute care nursing experience preferred. Dialysis experience is preferred but not required. New graduate nurses and experienced nurses may be considered based on department needs and training capacity.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of nursing principles, patient assessment, documentation standards, infection prevention, and safe medication administration. Ability to communicate effectively, prioritize in a fast-paced environment, respond to changes in patient condition, and work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team.

Work Environment: This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting in the delivery of patient care and operation of dialysis-related equipment. The role may require moving or assisting with equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Work is performed in a hospital environment with exposure to communicable diseases, blood and bodily fluids, and other conditions common to direct patient care settings. This position serves a culturally and linguistically diverse patient population.
