Job Overview
The Overnight Information Technology Support Technician I provides first-level technical support during overnight hospital operations. The technician troubleshoots common technology issues, performs routine maintenance and support tasks, documents overnight activity, and escalates issues requiring advanced assistance. Because the position works primarily overnight, the technician must be dependable, comfortable working independently, able to follow established procedures, and capable of recognizing when an issue requires escalation. An important responsibility is maintaining continuity between overnight and daytime IT operations through accurate documentation and effective shift handoff.
Scheduled Mon-Tue (11:00pm-7:00am); Wed (1:00am-8:30am); Thu-Fri (11:00pm-7:00am)
Duties
- Respond to support requests involving computers, software, printers, telephones, user accounts, peripherals, and other supported technology.
- Troubleshoot and resolve routine hardware, software, printer, telephone, and connectivity issues.
- Perform approved password resets and account unlocks.
- Set up, deploy, replace, and relocate computers, monitors, printers, telephones, and other equipment.
- Assist with approved software installations, patches, updates, and routine maintenance.
- Perform scheduled printer and equipment checks and ensure designated printers are operational and appropriately stocked.
- Perform routine overnight walkthroughs to proactively identify technology issues.
- Document support requests, troubleshooting, actions, and resolutions in the IT ticketing system.
- Maintain an overnight activity log of completed work, maintenance, checks, and unresolved issues.
- Promptly escalate critical, unresolved, patient-care-impacting, cybersecurity, network, server, or infrastructure issues according to established procedures.
- Assist with IT inventory, asset tracking, workstation moves, equipment installations, and other IT projects.
- Run Cat 6 and other approved low-voltage cabling as assigned. Termination, testing, or activation may be completed or verified by daytime IT personnel.
- Provide the daytime IT team with a clear handoff of unresolved issues and work requiring follow-up.
- Participate in the Wednesday morning overlap with daytime technicians and the IT Director to review overnight activity, unresolved issues, and priorities.
- Participate in the weekend and holiday on-call rotation.
- Follow hospital IT, cybersecurity, privacy, and confidentiality requirements.
- Perform other IT-related duties as assigned.
Experience/Qualifications
Required -
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows, computer hardware, peripherals, and common software.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and responsibly during overnight hours.
- Ability to follow written procedures and technical instructions.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems and accurately document work performed.
- Ability to recognize urgent situations and appropriately escalate issues.
- Dependable attendance and ability to participate in the weekend and holiday on-call rotation.
Preferred -
- Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
- CompTIA A certification or willingness to obtain certification within one year.
- Previous help desk, technical support, or customer service experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft 365.
- Healthcare experience is helpful but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk throughout hospital facilities;
- Lift and carry technology equipment up to 50 pounds;
- Bend, kneel, reach, and work under desks;
- Install approved IT cabling;
- Travel to supported off-site locations when necessary.
