Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Sleep Lab & EEG Services, the Registered EEG Tech performs diagnostic neurophysiologic and related studies, including electroencephalography (EEG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), long-term monitoring (LTM), and continuous EEG monitoring in the intensive care setting (ICU/cEEG). This role ensures accurate data acquisition, patient safety and comfort, and complete documentation to support physician interpretation.
Essential Position Responsibilities
- Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for testing; verify orders, patient identification, and pertinent clinical history.
- Apply electrodes accurately using accepted placement systems (e.g., 10–20) and troubleshoot impedance/artifact issues throughout the study.
- Conduct routine and extended EEG recordings (including LTM and ICU/cEEG) and continuously monitor waveforms, patient status, and equipment function to ensure high-quality recordings.
- Document, annotate, and summarize studies per departmental standards; ensure data integrity and prepare complete records for physician interpretation.
- Explain procedures to patients and families; obtain pertinent history within scope; position patients appropriately and maintain privacy, dignity, and comfort throughout testing.
- Perform and document activation procedures and bedside interventions as ordered (e.g., photic stimulation, hyperventilation) and promptly recognize and escalate urgent findings/events per protocol (including seizure activity during LTM/ICU/cEEG).
- Follow infection prevention practices, including hand hygiene, use of PPE, and cleaning/disinfection or reprocessing of electrodes and equipment according to department policy and manufacturer guidance; follow isolation precautions as indicated.
- Maintain and troubleshoot EEG/NCS equipment and software; complete required quality checks, calibrations, and basic preventive maintenance; report equipment concerns and ensure supplies are stocked and ready for use.
- Collaborate with neurology providers, nursing, respiratory therapy, and other caregivers to coordinate testing and continuous monitoring; provide clear handoffs and communicate patient status, study progress, and technical issues during shift changes.
- Adhere to patient safety practices and departmental/hospital policies, including safe patient handling, fall precautions, and protection of confidential information (HIPAA) in all verbal, written, and electronic communications.
- Support department operations through teamwork, precepting/training as assigned, and participation in performance improvement activities; maintain required competencies and continuing education.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED, required. Additional education in neurodiagnostics, polysomnography, or a related allied health field, preferred.
- Licensure and Certifications: CPR/BLS, required. RST, RPSGT, or SDS, required.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of previous experience in EEG or a sleep lab, required. Experience with long-term monitoring and/or inpatient/ICU workflows, preferred.
Work Environment: This position works primarily in a hospital/clinical setting with frequent direct contact with patients and families (including inpatient units and/or ICU environments as assigned). Work involves frequent walking and standing, transporting and handling testing equipment and supplies, and occasional lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs. The role requires adherence to safety practices and may involve exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and isolation precautions; use of appropriate PPE is required. The work environment may include noise, interruptions, and alarms typical of patient care areas, and the employee will serve a culturally and linguistically diverse patient population.
