TITLE: Secondary Media Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS: As set by state certification authorities
REPORTS TO: Principal
SUPERVISES: Library Aides/Student Assistants/Volunteers in the Media Center
JOB GOAL: To provide each student with an enriched library environment containing a wide
variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual probing, growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with Media Selection Committee to obtain recommendations for purchase.
- Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new library materials.
- Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials for special units or projects.
- Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
- Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
- Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.
- Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources.
- Assists and monitors small groups/individual students on projects assigned by teachers.
- Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
- Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
- Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic, on invitation of the teacher.
- Conducts orientation classes at the beginning of each year for all fourth graders and other as directed by the principal.
- Conduct reading and storytelling periods for class groups.
- Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
- Arranges frequently-changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library’s patrons.
- Prepares and administers the library budget.
- Prepares annual reports to ADE and such other reports as required by the school board.
- Supervises library aides in the performance of their duties.
- Prepares and maintains a list of community resource persons and contacts them on request by a teacher.
- Performs such other duties as assigned by the principal.
- Keep up to date with technological changes.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Salary and work year as determined by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
