Mindsets at WLA:

At Washington Leadership Academy, we approach our work with intentionality, courage, and a student-centered perspective:

  • We recognize that the work WLA is undertaking is challenging, but we are tenacious in pursuit of our mission to prepare our kids to thrive in the world and change it for the better.
  • We prepare ALL students for both four-year college and computer science-related careers, including those with special education needs, significant behavioral needs, and varied backgrounds.
  • We commit to restorative discipline practices, even when it is hard, because we know they are best for our students.
  • We deeply believe in the inherent power of young people and view school as a place where students are encouraged to grow and nurture that leadership and power.
  • We ensure students are deserving of warmth and respect from adults at all times.
  • We accept responsibility to support all students’ growth, understanding that students are still developing and require guidance that meets them where they are.
  • We see learning as a collaboration between students and teachers, all of whom bring passion, experiences, and curiosity to the classroom.
  • We hold that grades reflect mastery rather than compliance, and are the shared responsibility of both teacher (for engaging students) and student (for taking advantage of learning opportunities).
  • We place equity, inclusion, and empowerment at the center of our work, specifically around race, gender identity/sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Key Responsibilities:
