SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER / CASE MANAGER
Title: Special Education Teacher / Case Manager
Qualifications/Credentials: Possession of, or qualifications for, special education certification and/or HQT; commitment to education in the least restrictive setting; ability to identify educational disabilities, plan remediation and evaluate student progress; ability to function as a member of an educational team and collaborate with general education staff, support personnel, community agencies and parents; strong behavior management, positive discipline skills and ability to be flexible and receptive to change.
Reports To: Building Principal, Special Education Coordinator and/or Director of Student Support Services.
Supervises: N/A
Job Goal: To coordinate and monitor the special education process, ensuring compliance with federal and state mandates and district policy and procedures. To assure that all students learn the basic and essential skills at each grade level.
Performance Responsibilities:
1.Meets and instructs assigned classes, including those that are co-taught, in the locations and at the times required as determined by administration.
2.Prepares for classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
3.Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, unit, projects and the like. Communicates these objectives to the students.
4.Strives to implement by instruction and action, the district’s philosophy of education and instruction goals and objectives. Class time is organized so that it is spent on instruction, which engages the students in active learning.
5.Demonstrates well-developed communication skills including clarity in the oral and written presentation of ideas, as well as demonstrating effective listening skills.
6.Communicates, consults and collaborates in regards to student needs, accommodations and modifications, regularly and effectively with students, co-workers, parent/guardians and the community and exhibits appropriate and professional interaction skills.
7.Demonstrates the ability to use a variety of assessment tools and progress monitoring techniques; progress reports are completed as required as outlined in the I.E.P.
8.Completes academic testing for initial and tri-annual evaluations and assists other professional staff in identifying educational disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of student progress.
9.Provides direct services as needed, plans lessons that employ a variety of instructional techniques, and creates an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, needs and interests of the students.
10.Understands each student’s disability and tailors a plan of instruction to assist the student in learning.
11.Demonstrates an understanding of best practices regarding instruction, assessment and curriculum development; knows or has the willingness to learn a variety of specialized instruction programs.
12.Ensures all required documents are prepared prior to special education meetings.
13.Develops the IEP in collaboration with team members.
14.Follows confidentiality policies and procedures regarding students, parents/guardians, and fellow staff members.
15.Possesses knowledge of State and Federal special education regulations/time lines and maintains compliancy for student files in the special education office as well as in the NHSEIS system as required by law, district policy and administration regulations.
16.Responds as soon as possible, but no later than 48 business hours, to parent, student, teacher and administration inquiries via phone and/or e-mail.
17.Be familiar with and utilize appropriate school and community resources for the benefit of student and families.
18.Assists staff with, or directly administer, NECAP accommodations and NECAP-ALT, MAP, and participates in building level analysis of results for developing program and student improvement plans.
19.Utilizes technology with proficiency for professional use (may include but not be limited to Outlook, Microsoft Word, web-based grading program) and assistive technology to support student achievement.
20.Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
21.Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
22.Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day, when required or requested by immediate supervisor.
23.Attends staff meetings and serves on committees.
24.Demonstrates knowledge of subject material for area for specialized instruction.
25.Fulfills district’s professional development requirements.
26.Participates in at least one activity per year.
27.Provide direction to support staff assisting in the classroom.

Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will constantly bend neck and back, use hands for repetitive grasping and pushing/pulling. The employee is frequently required to stand/walk, squat, kneel, use hands for fine manipulation. The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as books. Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases as carried by students; exposed to student noise levels. Required to work outdoors in inclement weather; required to stand for prolonged periods. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school.
