About The Opportunity

Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) is seeking a Systems & Discovery Librarian II to join our new Library Systems & Discovery team. This position will support our mission by ensuring that library systems and integrations work seamlessly for the people who use them:

  • Supporting library staff by implementing stable, efficient workflows and rolling out product features and enhancements that improve the experience of library work
  • Supporting patrons by making it easy to register for library cards, discover materials, manage accounts, and access library integrated services online.

As part of the Library Systems & Discovery team, the Systems & Discovery Librarian complements existing cataloging, metadata, and acquisitions expertise on the team. This position will bring a strong focus to patron workflows such as accounts and registration, circulation & holds, catalog usability, and staff support at the point of service. This position will serve as a subject matter expert on WCCLS’s integrated library system (ILS), Polaris, and discovery layer, BiblioCore, while also supporting numerous other integrations, including online resources, ebook applications, streaming video, automated messaging, and data clean-up services. With an emphasis on patron experience, access, and usability, this role focuses on how system behavior and stability affects real people and public service outcomes for the whole community.

The Library Cooperative and Upcoming Projects

This is a new position for WCCLS and comes out of a multi-year funding and governance evaluation process that our cooperative library system has undertaken. The cooperative system is a partnership between the county, 9 cities and 3 nonprofit associations. Our 12 partners operate 16 library locations, and historically have managed their physical collections locally, while WCCLS provided centralized digital collections. The partners have agreed to centralize collection management and technical services across print and digital by July 2027, to support the long-term fiscal sustainability of the system. Learn more about this transition and see local collection statistics.

The Systems & Discovery Librarian will be joining a new team dedicated to building capacity and resiliency for the ILS and systems support as our organization, operations, and services grow. They will work collaboratively with other teams at WCCLS (including Collections and Technical Services, IT, Community Relations) and at our libraries, supporting internal operations, library staff workflows, and access to library services.

Upcoming Projects Include

  • Supporting the cooperative’s transition from distributed to centralized collection management & technical services
  • Implementing new ILS features and configuration
  • Implementing new circulation policy requirements for the ILS and other services

About Washington County Cooperative Library Services

WCCLS is the primary funding source for public libraries in Washington County and provides the essential infrastructure that links independently operated library buildings together into one system that is accessible to all county residents. This includes library collections, technology access, the integrated library system and discovery layer, materials movement, and administering the cooperative library system, including policies, contracts, data analysis and reporting. The cooperative model ensures that residents in cities big and small, as well as rural and unincorporated areas across the county, have access to the same life-changing library services.

Washington County is located just west of Portland, Oregon. We are the second most populous county in our welcoming state and the five most spoken languages after English are Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, and Russian. With a strong regional tech economy, Washington County has a high median education and income level, and there is strong community support for our public library system. In November 2025, voters supported a significant funding increase for WCCLS. Our Board of County Commissioners are also great supporters of our library system, including our deeply held value of the freedom to read.
