Job Overview
The Library Services Manager directs daily operations of a library branch in accordance with the policies established by the Library Board of Trustees. Manager may be required to work evenings and weekends.
Position Requirements:
Education:
- Master’s degree in library science or information science from an ALA accredited program OR an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Experience:
- Three (3) years of experience as a professional librarian with at least one (1) year of supervisory experience preferred
Physical Abilities:
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to lift, push, or carry objects between 10-50 pounds with or without assistive equipment (book carts, dollies, etc.)
Responsibilities
- Coordinate activities of a branch library to effect operational efficiency. Determines work procedures, work schedules, and workflow
- Supervise, motivate, evaluate branch staff to include initiating progressive discipline processes as necessary
- Monitor training for branch staff to be in compliance with state requirements
- Prepare reports and statistics for the Library Director and other stakeholders
- Ensure that the buildings and grounds of the branch are properly maintained
- Lead branch collection development in teamwork with other staff as directed
- Maintain accurate accounting records, make county deposits, and follow a budget as requested by Library Director and Finance Assistant
- Assist library programming staff with scheduling and outreach for all ages
- Perform or assist in registration of customers, charging and discharging of library materials, organization of incoming materials, distribution of materials to appropriate areas, opening and closing of library, recording daily statistics, and other patron-facing operations
- Uphold policies established by the Library Board of Trustees
- Participate in system-wide initiatives and committees as required by the Library Director
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft Suite of products, computer applications, and current technology related to library work
- Trends and advancements in library management practices and resources
- Principles and practices of employee supervision and training; including hiring, work planning, and evaluation
- Library services and programs and their relationship to community needs
- Public library administration
Ability to:
- Initiate and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment
- Demonstrate a strong customer service orientation
- Analyze varied library operations and administrative problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions or actions
- Work as an effective member of the management team
- Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Effectively present information and respond to questions from library staff, library stakeholders, and the general public
- Be flexible and adaptive when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment
