What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Medical Technician - Basic position at Washington County Government?
Job Summary: Performs beginning level life support, stabilization procedures, and emergency medical care in the Emergency Medical Services department of WCEMS.
Key Responsibilities:
- May perform any act consistent with the EMT level upon direction of the EMTParamedic as defined by patient care protocols of the ALS program.
- Serves as operator of an emergency medical unit responding to calls for assistance.
- Administers beginning level of life support techniques and procedures based on patient assessment, including all skills at the EMT level.
- Operates a convalescent unit transporting patients to a variety of locations.
- Assists with daily cleaning and inventory of emergency equipment, supplies, fluids, administration sets.
- Complete necessary records and reports for emergency calls including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability.
- Report facility maintenance, radio, vehicle and equipment problems Rescue Squad Inc. to appropriate level of authority.
- Participates in cleaning and maintaining ambulances, equipment, station house and premises
- Performs related duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
Education: High School Graduate
Experience: Some experience as an emergency medical technician or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Skills:
- Working knowledge of and skill in administering emergency medical procedures and techniques and maintenance and repair of rescue equipment.
- Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Working knowledge of intravenous therapy and skill in recognizing adverse conditions.
- Working knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in emergency care of patients and accident victims.
- Working knowledge of county geography and locations of roads and streets.
- Skill in recognizing patient traumas and signs and symptoms of medical emergencies to determine appropriate treatment.
- Skill in safe and efficient operation of rescue equipment.
- Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, medical protocols and standing orders.
- Ability to work with a diverse socio-economic population, based on the unique situations encountered.
- Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations.
- Ability to drive safely an ambulance in adverse conditions and according to motor vehicles laws.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner with the public.
- Ability to deal with stress and death and dying patients.
- Ability to accurately record services provided on required forms.
- Ability to work with co-workers, law enforcement personnel, fire personnel, medical personnel, patients and the general public.
- Ability to maintain vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient contact.
Certifications:
- Certification by the NC Medical Examination Board as an Emergency Medical Technician.
- Completion of additional course work and/or certification to include, at a minimum, certification in Trama or other areas, as determined necessary.
- Valid driver’s license
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, administer emergency medical services to the public, and use measurement devices.
- Employees are also responsible for maintaining supplies, performing janitorial duties at the base, and performing miscellaneous office duties.
- Employees are exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
