Description

The Washington County Free Library (WCFL) seeks a collaborative, service-oriented professional who demonstrates strong independent judgment and initiative to assist the Head of Information Services in providing high-quality service to adult patrons. This position supports the coordination of customer-focused services, including responding to informational inquiries, providing reader’s advisory and technology assistance, and supporting adult programming. The successful candidate will perform a variety of administrative and operational responsibilities within the Information Services Department and will oversee department operations in the absence of the Department Head.

Location: Based at the Fletcher Branch of the Washington County Free Library; may require travel to other branches.

Hours: Full-time; 40 hours per week; schedule may vary.

Salary ranges: Anticipated hiring rate will be $28.29/hour.

Essential Functions

This list is representative and does not include all the duties this position entails:

· Creates and updates weekly work and public service desk schedules to meet departmental and library needs.

· Coordinates Tech Help appointments. May conduct appointments as needed and as time allows.

· Coordinates departmental displays and ensures materials are findable in the ILS.

· Coordinates programming for adults at the Fletcher Branch. May plan and implement programming as needed and as time allows.

· Coordinates the compilation of departmental statistics, monitors them as needed, and enters them into a central data collection point on a monthly basis as directed by the Director of Operations.

· Updates the departmental staff website and SharePoint site.

· Runs reports as needed or assigned.

· Assists in formulating goals and objectives for the department and oversees their implementation as assigned.

· Works public service desks as needed and provides excellent customer service to library patrons in person, via phone, and through email, including assistance with accessing, locating, and requesting materials and finding information of all kinds.

· Assists patrons with various technology needs as required.

· Provides readers’ advisory to patrons, with a primary focus on adults.

· Resolves a variety of patron complaints and issues.

· Acts as project manager for special projects and initiatives, including participation in larger library initiatives, projects, or fundraisers.

· Assists with the evaluation, selection, and maintenance of the Reference and Periodical Collections system wide.

· Participates in outreach activities or community events as needed or assigned.

· Works in other branches or departments as needed, at the discretion of the Director of Public Services.

· Attends relevant conferences, workshops, and other training opportunities for the purposes of ongoing professional growth and development and the completion of required continuing education credits.

· Participates in meetings and sits on committees and represents the library in a positive light through advocacy locally and beyond.

· Works a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

· Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of librarianship, with particular reference to meeting the information and technology needs of adults, and with administrative management.

· High level of proficiency with the Internet, modern technology, and new emerging library technologies, and the flexibility to adapt to and assess possible new technologies.

· Good information retrieval skills and organizational abilities.

· Thorough knowledge of the goals, resources, policies, practices, and activities of the Library and the Information Services Department.

· Ability to evaluate community needs, interests, and expectations as these relate to adult programming.

· Ability to evaluate library programs and services, and to design and implement new methods and improvements to existing library services.

· Ability to work with people of all ages and backgrounds.

· Familiarity with new applications of computer technology related to public library services.

· In-depth and broad knowledge of popular reader interests, books, and authors and the ability to provide excellent readers’ advisory service.

· Knowledge of a wide variety of reference sources, authors, literature, publishers, and publications.

· Ability to organize, plan, and execute work and to set and reach goals with minimal direct supervision.

· Knowledge and skills necessary to supervise, guide, evaluate, train, and communicate with library staff of all levels.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contacts encountered in carrying out the responsibilities of the position.

· Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

· Knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively as part of a team toward the achievement of common goals and objectives.

· Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, multi-task, prioritize, and to be flexible as needed.

· Creative problem-solving skills and flexible thinking.

Qualifications & Requirements:

· Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program and considerable experience in professional library work, including supervisory/management experience.

· A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel to various branches as needed are required.

· Experience working at the Information Services Desk in a public library is preferred.

· Must be eligible for Maryland Public Librarian Certification.
