What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Stadium Engineering position at Washington Commanders?
The Director of Stadium Operations Engineering is responsible for the leadership, reliability, and performance of all building systems at Northwest Stadium, serving as the technical authority for daily operations and event-critical readiness as it relates to building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire and life safety systems. This role leads engineering staff, oversees preventive maintenance and some capital projects, while ensuring all infrastructure operates safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. The position may also provide engineering support to other organizational facilities as needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provide overall leadership and accountability for all engineering systems at Northwest Stadium and on some occasions, the Practice Facility. This will include electrical distribution, emergency power, HVAC and central plant systems, plumbing, fire/life safety, BAS/BMS, vertical transportation, and some building envelope.
· Ensure facilities operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and AHJ requirements, serving as the senior technical authority during system failures, outages, and emergencies.
· Lead, develop, and manage stadium engineering team and technicians, and establish clear expectations, training plans, and succession pathways.
· Establish and enforce standardized engineering procedures, documentation, and performance metrics while accounting for the differing operational demands of event-driven and daily-use facilities.
· Own preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, CMMS utilization, asset lifecycle planning, and reliability initiatives to minimize unplanned downtime.
· Assist VP of Operations to develop operating budgets, multi-year capital plans, and project prioritization across both facilities.
· Lead or support capital projects including system replacements, upgrades, retrofits, and commissioning, while managing external engineers, contractors, and service providers.
· Oversee energy management, utilities, sub-metering, and efficiency initiatives to improve performance transparency and cost control.
· Ensure engineering readiness for all Stadium events and provide ongoing support for football operations, training schedules, and specialty spaces at the Practice Facility when needed.
· Coordinate closely with Event Operations, Football Operations, Security, AV/Broadcast, Grounds, and Concessions to support seamless execution.
· Maintain accurate as-builts, SOPs, emergency procedures, and compliance documentation.
· Support life safety planning, emergency response protocols, drills, and post-incident analysis.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
· Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Facilities Management, or related technical field, or equivalent experience.
· 7-10 years of progressive engineering or facilities leadership experience in complex, high-occupancy or mission-critical environments.
· Strong working knowledge of electrical systems, HVAC/central plant operations, BAS/BMS, and life safety systems.
· Proven ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and execute capital programs.
Preferred
· Experience supporting live events and athletic or performance-driven facilities.
· Experience standardizing systems, processes, and teams across multiple sites.
· Familiarity with CMMS platforms, energy management systems, and commissioning best practices.
· Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple facilities with differing operational demands.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS
- On-site presence required.
- Evening, weekend, and event-day availability is required.
- Participation in on-call rotation for critical systems as needed.
- Travel between facilities as required by operational needs.
COMPENSATION
- Salary Range: $145k - $155k
