This position will assist in all aspects of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning trade. Primary duties involve assisting skilled tradesmen in duties necessary to operate and maintain University HVAC systems efficiently and reliably to provide a comfortable environment in classrooms, laboratories, and offices on campus.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the maintenance or repair of HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, energy recovery heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and similar equipment.
  • Lubricates and packs bearings in heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment.
  • Changes filter media, adjusts and replace belts, clean traps and strainers.
  • Inspects machinery in operation to assure proper functioning, including checking pressures and temperatures.
  • Assists in troubleshooting and maintenance off fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary.
  • Responds in a timely manner to work orders and maintains related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintains log of tasks performed and writes reports as required.
  • Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair.
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
  • Supports campus-wide activities in the areas of event setups, snow and ice removal, and any other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm. This position works 40 hours a week.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED
  • Up to 3 years of experience in residential or commercial HVAC and plumbing or a closely related field.
  • Must be willing to receive additional training as required.
  • Required to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written directions and provide responses in writing.
  • Ability to use computers to read and respond to emails and to use basic applications is also required.
  • This position requires the possession and maintenance of a valid Virginia vehicle operator's license and a good driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in residential or commercial refrigeration, HVAC and plumbing or a combination of experience and education from which a similar skillset would be obtained.
  • Journeyman or master's certification in HVAC is preferred.
  • Must be willing to receive additional training as required.
  • Required to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written directions and provide responses in writing.
  • Ability to use computers to read and respond to emails and to use basic applications is also required.
  • This position requires the possession and maintenance of a valid Virginia vehicle operator's license and a good driving record.

Minimum Pay: Candidates with significant experience may be considered at the HVAC/Plumber level, which has a corresponding pay grade with a minimum pay of $30.89.

Physical Requirements

  • Fine Motor Manipulation: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Working Conditions

  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
  • The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

Types of Work: Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
