POSITION TITLE: Behavior Specialist 

DEPARTMENT: Special Education 

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Services and/or designee 

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Teacher contract  12 additional days and SPED Stipend

OVERTIME STATUS: Exempt 

 

Qualifications: Currently holds an advanced degree in education, psychology, or related field and certification as a BCBA. Experience in a public school setting preferred; Ability to interpret and implement special education laws, policies and procedures in order to maintain compliance with local, state and federal guidelines; Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with administrators, teachers and staff; Knowledge and expertise in functional behavioral assessment (FBA), behavioral intervention plan (BIP), and behavior programming/management. 

 

Job Summary: The person in this position must possess an understanding of evidence-based behavior interventions, instructional strategies, and standards for staff training. This person collaborates with school teams and parents to evaluate student progress, determine the best interventions to improve student outcomes, monitor the progress of these outcomes, provide regular feedback to the team, and assist in the successful implementation of evidence-based interventions. This person also provides support and training to staff on the implementation of positive behavior supports, and will analyze data on the success of school-wide initiatives to support all students within the tiered behavior support system. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide behavior interventions to a diverse population of students. 
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental characteristics of students in grades preschool through age 21, including students with special needs. 
  • Provide consultation with administrators, regular classroom teachers, special education teachers, counselors, vocational rehabilitation counselors, etc. concerned about children exhibiting particular behavior problems. 
  • Provide consultation on functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans for students exhibiting behavior problems. 
  • Facilitate and support teachers' use of classroom-based and developmentally appropriate, evidence-based behavioral interventions, for both individual children and groups of children in order to enhance their acquisition of grade-level content and behavioral strategies.
  • Plan and provide ongoing professional development for effective behavior management which includes collaboration, communication, and cohesion across various site teams. 
  • Model and assist teachers in the use of effective behavior management strategies based on appropriate expectations for student age and disability. 
  • Coordinate district-wide collection of data from FBA and BIPs and help oversee the program for writing FBAs and BIPs. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information following FERPA guidelines (discipline records, agency referrals, IEPs, psychological evaluations, etc.). 
  • Ability to respect student and staff confidential files and records (e.g. discipline records, agency referrals, IEPs, psychoeducational evaluations, FBA/BIP, etc.) for the purposes of writing behavior plans as required by professional standards.
  • Collaborate with district RTI teams in the use of RTI/behavioral data 
  • Analyze data to determine the success of behavior management strategies within the district. 
  • Obtain CPI training and maintains yearly certification requirements. Follow reporting guidelines set forth by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in regards to seclusion/restraint. 
  • Advanced human relations, communication, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, administrators, teachers, and support staff
  • Organizational skills and ability to manage independently all materials and paperwork; maintain up to date documentation. 
  • Work well with both supervisors and members of the team. 
  • Maintain reliable, consistent, and punctual attendance. 
  • Have reliable transportation; required to travel between multiple sites in a safe and timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services and/or designee.
