Wage $18.25 - $21.85 per hour

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the assigned teacher/ancillary staff assists a student with visual impairments.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:

    • Attends to behavioral needs of students while following prescribed behavioral management or instructional programs.
    • Physically able to perform the duties of this position including running/walking, bending, lifting, twisting, and responding to physical needs of the students.
    • Assists in the development and implementation of individualized education programs.
    • Assists the teacher(s) with planning, production, organization of instructional material, and individual and/or group instruction activities for promoting and maintaining educational team goals.
    • Assist staff with necessary modifications and supplemental services for the purpose of meeting the student’s academic needs.
    • Carry out basic Braille formatting for literacy, foreign language, and Nemeth code rules.
    • Consult with classroom teachers for providing accurate and appropriated adapted materials.
    • Cooperate with other staff members for documenting activities and providing safety of the student.
    • Operate and assist student in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment (e.g. Braillers, keyboarding equipment, electronic scanners, personal computers, etc.)
    • Provide adapted materials utilizing a variety of techniques (e.g. recorded texts, tactile graphics, Braille, etc.)
    • Transcribe notes as needed for assisting student, staff and parents.
    • Use Braille translation software for meeting the student’s educational goals.
    • Use word processing programs on computers for providing organization and maintenance of records.
    • Prepare adapted materials in a timely fashion as needed by the student and teachers.
    • Occasionally assist other personnel for supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
    • Complies with District policies and regulations.
    • Attends district trainings, as directed.
    • Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity.
    • Responsible to maintain regula, reliable and punctual attendance.
    • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the teacher or administrator.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 60 hours of college credit or High school diploma and passed state or local test designed to demonstrate knowledge and ability in subject areas as defined by NCLB requirements (example: Work Keys) may be required for some paraprofessional positions.
  • Prefer prior experience working with special needs children.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, students,
  • staff and the general public consistent with the duties of this position.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with individuals and groups of students to support academics and behavior management.
  • Ability to learn new skills, flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks.
  • Works well with others, follows written and oral directions and completes assignments given.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, staff members, and departments and business contacts outside of the District.
  • Is self-directed, and works without direct supervision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions, while performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50 pounds of materials, or lift children from wheelchairs, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
