Job Summary
Under the direction of the Gurnee Teen Center Director, the Youth Specialist works with a team to provide programs and activities for Warren Township Teen Center members. The Youth Specialist assists in planning and implementing various activities and events, and assists with the daily operations of the Warren Township Teen Center.
Pay Rate: $15.50 per hour
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly
Position Available: Summer seasonal position, mid-May through mid-August
Program Hours: Monday-Friday; 8:00am - 6:00pm
Standard Work Hours: Monday-Friday; 8:00am - 4:00pm or 10:00am - 6:00pm
Job Qualifications
- Minimum 17 years of age
- Bilingual Spanish-speaking a plus
- First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire
- Some experience working with you and/or teens preferred
- Valid driver's license preferred
Duties
- Plan, coordinate, maintain and implement programs for the Teen Center
- Engage members to participate in activities
- Assist with/participate in field trips, special events, sports, games, and programs
- Participate in required training (Mandated Reporter, safety, etc.).
- Maintain open and positive communication with members; serve as a positive role model
- Provide homework assistance to members
- Monitor participants, equipment, and supplies; supervise check-out and return of all equipment, supplies, and games
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of Teen Center facility
- Monitor behavior of members; respond to violations following established protocols
- Review rules and information with new members; enter member information electronically
- Recruit new Teen Center Members
- Maintain current knowledge of township services and youth service programs
- Maintain verbal and written communication with other Teen Center staff
- Help open and close the facility
- Operate snack shop: maintain inventory, restock, handle cash and deposits, report discrepancies to Director
- Monitor Township Center property and patrons under the direction of the Township Supervisor and/or Director
- Maintain regular required attendance
- Apply basic first aid and assist participants when needed
- Perform miscellaneous duties (answer phones, file documents)

- Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs and activities appropriate for teens
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating problem solving skills and establishing trust
- Work with families and youth from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to engage in physical activity during programs and activities
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
This position operates indoors in gymnasiums, multi-purpose rooms, and exercise rooms, as well as outdoors at different activity fields, parks, aquatic centers, etc. The noise level can range from quiet to loud. When working inside conditions can include different types of lighting and temperatures. When working outdoors you may be exposed to different types of weather conditions.
