POSITION SUMMARY:
The overall purpose of the CMA position is to participate in and oversee the provision of resident care as prescribed by the attending physician, consistent with accepted standards of care and within the scope of CMA training and licensure. The role of the CMA is to administer the prescribed medication to the residents and provide support to the nursing department. They may also assist with assessments, providing care, updating records, and completing documentation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Maintains adequate stock of drugs, ensures that storage of drugs follows prescribed
conditions of temperature and humidity and verifies that all drugs are labeled properly.
Prepares medication for residents.
Distributes medication and instructs residents in proper application/consumption of medications
per the directions of the physician.
Records each distribution of medication in resident's medical file.
Takes vital signs and records on the appropriate document.
Can be responsible for documenting, faxing, following up, and providing documentation required
for all authorizations for each entity requiring prior authorization for all medical care.
Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to resident and staff issues.
Assist in preventing spread of infection by using universal precautions.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time.
Must be able to cope and handle the emotional and mental stress of the position.
Ability to function effectively, productively and calmly.
Communicates with medical staff, nursing service and other department supervisors.
Observes, assesses, and reports resident condition/changes, and documentation.
Assists in collection of data relevant to resident assessment and evaluation.
Consults with nurse regarding changes in resident's condition.
Receives, transcribes, and executes physicians' orders.
Assures implementation of care plans as directed.
Oversees/monitors functions and activities of subordinate staff.
Participates in assigning duties for subordinate staff.
Investigates/documents accidents and incidents.
Identifies/secures equipment and supplies.
Contributes to assurance of resident care consistent with accepted standards of care and established
policy and procedure.
Encourages safety to prevent accidents and assures equipment safety.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Attends required in-service training.
Functions within the constraints of established policy and procedure consistent with accepted nursing
standards.
- Communicates in a professional and courteous manner using effective verbal and non-verbal
communication skills with residents, their families, and co-workers.
- Maintains confidentiality of department, resident, employee information, communication, and
documentation as well as compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) regulations.
- Clocks in and out for all working/training hours. Working off the clock will not be permitted at any
time or for any reason.
Maintain compliance with Compliance program and plan.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Qualifications:
Freedom from illegal use of drugs.
Freedom from use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
Anyone found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting or mistreating individuals in a
health care related setting are ineligible for employment in the position.
Education, Certificates, and/or Experience:
Certification for CMA license and a current, valid license or registration in the state where
employed are required.
CPR certification desired.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, nursing/Resident progress notes and nursing procedures.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from department heads,
customers (Residents, family members, physicians, etc.) and the public.
- Computer skills required.
