Environmental Manager – Heavy Civil Construction
Position Summary The Environmental Manager is responsible for managing environmental compliance on large-scale heavy civil and earthwork construction projects. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and owner-specific environmental requirements while supporting aggressive construction schedules. The Environmental Manager works closely with project management, field supervision, and owner environmental teams. Key Responsibilities • Manage environmental compliance for mass grading, utilities, drainage, and waterway construction • Implement and maintain project-specific permits and plans, including SWPPP, NOI filings and postings, erosion control, dewatering, and applicable 401/404 permits • Serve as the primary point of contact with regulatory agencies and owner environmental representatives • Perform routine site inspections and audits to verify compliance with permit conditions and project requirements • Identify deficiencies early and work with field teams to implement corrective actions • Maintain environmental documentation, inspection logs, reports, and required site postings • Support regulatory audits, inspections, and closeout documentation • Coordinate environmental requirements with superintendents, safety staff, and project managers to avoid schedule impacts • Provide practical field-level guidance to crews and subcontractors on environmental controls and BMPs Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent construction-based experience) • Experience supporting environmental compliance on heavy civil, earthwork, utility, or infrastructure projects • Working knowledge of stormwater regulations, erosion and sediment control, and construction permitting • Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and permit conditions • Strong organizational skills, documentation discipline, and professional communication abilities • Comfortable working in active construction environments Work Environment • Primarily field-based role on active construction sites • Frequent walking of uneven terrain and exposure to variable weather conditions • Occasional extended or off-hour work depending on project requirements Compensation • Competitive salary range based on experience • Benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, retirement, and paid time off
