JOB TITLE:   Diesel Mechanic     

DEPARTMENT:       Vehicle Maintenance, Ware County

JOB SUMMARY:      This position is responsible for diagnosing and correcting mechanical problems on a variety of heavy equipment and emergency vehicles.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Repairs and maintains all emergency vehicles for the county, including repairing engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, air brakes, lights, and air-conditioning systems.
• Performs preventive maintenance by checking antifreeze, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulic systems, tires and safety equipment on a variety of diesel-powered heavy equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, tractors, boom trucks, dump trucks, and garbage trucks.
• Performs corrective maintenance procedures including transmission, hydraulic, electrical, and various degrees of engine repair.
• Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, and heating and air conditioning repairs.
• Performs a variety of engine diagnosis procedures.
• Orders and picks up parts from vendors as needed.
• Completes and signs work orders according to service rendered.
• Maintains a clean work area.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• Knowledge of engine operation and mechanics for a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of hydraulic system operation and repair procedures.
• Knowledge of repair principles and procedures for gasoline- and diesel-powered engines.
• Knowledge of electrical system repair procedures.
• Skill in diagnosing mechanical problems for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Skill in performing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
• Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools used in repairing heavy equipment.
• Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Shop Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions requiring judgment in determining what needs to be done and how it is to be accomplished. Completed work is reviewed for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include work orders and service and repair manuals. These guidelines are clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: This work consists of related duties in the repair of heavy equipment and emergency vehicles. The need to be knowledgeable about many types of heavy equipment, each having its own set of specifications, contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain all heavy equipment and emergency vehicles for the county. Successful performance helps ensure safe, effective and available equipment and vehicles for the county government.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, parts vendors, and employees who bring equipment to the shop.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information and resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:    The work is performed outdoors and in a garage. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:     None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. CDL preferred.
