JOB TITLE: Police/Codes Enforcement Officer

DEPARTMENT: Planning and Codes, Ware County

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for assisting the department in enforcing Ware County codes.

MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Enforcing Georgia State Laws and Ware County ordinances pertinent to the job.
  • Responding to citizen complaints and inquiries.
  • Speaking to school and civic groups on county codes.
  • Maintaining standard operating procedures for the job; prepare daily activity reports.
  • Operates and maintains all equipment, including terminals, computers, recorders, and other communications system devices related to the job.
  • Represents county in court proceedings dealing with codes enforcement.
  • Monitors the maintenance of communication records, including violations; maintains records.
  • Prepares and maintains various reports on his responsible activities.
  • Attends training workshops, seminars and conventions as necessary.
  • Enforces litter control, unsafe buildings, animal ordinances, and other laws for the county.
  • Assist with and perform the duties of Animal Control when necessary.
  • Operates computer (including wireless laptop) at a high level of proficiency.
  • Conducts building inspections in accordance with pertinent laws and ordinances.
  • Assist other state and local law enforcement agencies with needed.
  • Available periodically for after-hours call-outs.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography and road system of the county.
  • Knowledge of the radio codes used in public safety work.
  • Skill in the operation of radio/communications equipment.
  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Skill in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Skill in making decisions accurately and rapidly.
  • Skill in the operation of computers.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Chief of Police or designee assigns work in terms of goals and objectives. The work is reviewed through frequent conferences, reports and observations of employee's activities.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include federal and state laws, county ordinances, the rules and regulations of state and federal crime information centers, FCC regulations, state agency guidelines, and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: This position consists of varied administrative tasks. The varied nature of the work contributes to its complexity.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to enforce codes and to prosecute code violators, as necessary. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of community life and property and affects the public image of the county government.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of service and support agencies, and the general public

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to resolve problems, provide services, and to assist codes office personnel, as necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee may be required to climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in an office and in field locations, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, construction machinery and inclement weather. The use of protective devices such as hearing protection, mask, protective eye-wear, boots or gloves may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the department in order to direct and coordinate work within the department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Act.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle operated.
