Position Summary
The custodian maintains a clean, safe, and welcoming environment in university buildings and facilities, in a manner that supports the university’s Catholic values and commitment to excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Pick up trash daily in offices and classrooms, public areas, and restrooms.
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, corridors and common areas.
- Vacuum rugs every day or as needed.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles; replace liners.
- Disinfect drinking fountains and public telephone areas daily.
- Dust offices, classrooms, and public areas weekly or as needed.
- Sweep, wet mop, strip, wax and polish floors weekly or as needed to maintain best appearance.
- In classrooms, wash off desk tops and chairs as needed.
- Clean inside windows and glass partitions as needed.
- Replenish supplies in restrooms and communal areas.
- Restrooms – refill toilet paper, paper towels and soap dispensers daily, disinfect sinks, toilets, mirrors, doors and partitions daily, mop floors with disinfectant daily or as needed, disinfect walls behind and under toilets weekly.
- Report any plumbing, electrical damages or needed repairs to the Maintenance Department.
- Turn in weekly supply lists.
- More intense cleaning of certain areas will be involved per our schedule.
- Use a walk-behind floor extractor to clean the floors of two gymnasiums daily.
- Follow all safety procedures and use cleaning chemicals responsibly and according to product specifications.
- Ensure security of assigned buildings and rooms during and after cleaning.
- Exhibit respect for the university’s Catholic identity by preserving a dignified environment, especially in chapels and religious spaces.
- Participate in team meetings and university training, as needed
- All other duties assigned or required

Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Must understand and support the Mission, Vision and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University, as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, and possess the following:
Education: High School diploma or GED
Work Experience: 1-3 years of previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred
Skills and abilities:
- Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty. Positive attitude a must.
- Willingness to support and uphold the values and mission of the Catholic university community.
- Ability to clean and maintain buildings in a safe and effective manner
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.
- Able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
- Needs to be able to stand/walk for long periods of time and operate cleaning equipment
- Requires repeated pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, kneeling and overhead work.
