POSITION SUMMARY

To provide direct instruction to students in Music in order to deliver Framingham Public Schools’ high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic proficiency for all students, and the closing of the achievement gap among subgroups within the schools. Support team, school, and district initiatives, provide support to all students’ academic, behavioral, social, emotional and mental health needs to ensure the development of the whole child while adhering to the district’s curriculum.

  • Music: Vocal/Instrumental/General (All Levels). 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Framingham Public Schools seeks candidates whose background, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all aspects of education.

 

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in the area of major study.
  • Able to play, teach, and lead students in learning all concert band instruments including percussion, woodwind, and brass instruments.
  • Prior experience leading large, instrumental music ensembles preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITY

To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

 

  • Possesses knowledge of music pedagogy.
  • Engages students in music-making and teaches musical skills in a variety of genres, including but not limited to: instrumental and vocal performance, musicianship, and music literacy.
  • Plans and implements culturally responsive music lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Establishes and nurtures a positive and equitable classroom culture rooted in high expectations that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the development and interests of students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals 
  • Establishes clear objectives for all instruction to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Consults with colleagues, students, and or parents on a regular basis.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and or volunteer(s).
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff and or school committees.
  • Participate in staff development programs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as reasonably assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Planning, Preparation, and Instruction

  • Plans a comprehensive program of study to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Develops schemes of work, lesson plans, and tests in accordance with established procedures and curriculum goals.
  • Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and learning activities to students.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Plans, prepares, and delivers lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Instructs and monitors students in the effective use of learning materials and equipment.
  • Uses relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Provides a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  • Deliver high-quality instruction to a diverse student population with varying levels of musical proficiency, ensuring equitable access to advanced instrumental techniques and musicianship.
  • Facilitate a diverse range of courses, including Concert Band and Music Appreciation, by developing culturally responsive lesson plans that align with district standards and foster comprehensive music literacy.
  • Direct and manage extracurricular instrumental ensembles, cultivating a supportive and disciplined environment that promotes student engagement and performance excellence.

II. Classroom Environment and Management

  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Manages student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing clear rules and procedures.
  • Maintains discipline in accordance with school rules.
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure.
  • Prepares the classroom for class activities.
  • Actively works to create a classroom environment that is inclusive and equitable for all students.
  • Oversee the maintenance, inventory, and procurement of Band equipment while strategically planning and executing all music programming and performances throughout the academic year.

III. Assessment and Reporting

  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis.
  • Assigns and grades class work, homework, tests, and assignments.
  • Observes and evaluates students' performance and development.
  • Encourages and monitors the progress of individual students and adjusts teaching strategies accordingly.
  • Provides appropriate and timely feedback on student work.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  • Updates all necessary records accurately as required by laws and district policies.

IV. Communication and Collaboration

  • Consults with colleagues, students, and parents regularly.
  • Communicates necessary information to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs.
  • Encourages parent and community involvement and promptly returns communications.
  • Participates in department, school, district, and parent meetings.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies governing student life and conduct.

V. Professional Responsibilities and Development

  • Demonstrates preparation and skill in working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Participates in professional activities and staff development programs.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff and/or school committees.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).
  • Participates in extracurricular activities as directed.

Additional Essential Responsibilities for the Itinerant Band Teacher Position Only:

  • Provide comprehensive instruction in beginning concert band pedagogy, including woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, ensuring students develop a strong technical and musical foundation.
  • Travel to multiple FPS elementary schools to lead the 5th-grade band program, ensuring consistent and high-quality instructional delivery across the district.
  • Partner with school-based general music educators to co-plan and execute winter and spring concert series, fostering a cohesive performance culture for students and families.
  • Establish and maintain rigorous systems for instrument care and maintenance; instruct students on responsible equipment handling to ensure the longevity of district resources.
  • Collaborate with Fine and Performing Arts (FPA) administration to manage the full lifecycle of instrument inventory, including distribution, ongoing maintenance, and end-of-year collection.

  • Must be able to move about and traverse throughout the school building.
  • Must often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time.
  • It is occasionally required to reach, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Is expected to lift at least 20 lbs (i.e., books, school supplies, etc.).
  • Must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and use hand strength to grasp tools.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Must communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff in person, via email, and on the telephone.
  • Must be able to see and hear continuously to ensure student safety and provide instruction.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
  • May be required to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces.
  • Must interact with students, parents, and staff and meet multiple demands.
  • While most of the workday is spent inside, must spend time outdoors for recess and special activities.
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids, disease, or pathogens.
  • May receive injuries from aggressive students.
  • May require physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling behavior.

  • The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Framingham Teachers Association (Unit A) Contract.
