A school electrician in Pennsylvania is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing all electrical systems within a school environment to ensure a safe learning and work environment. This role requires a strong understanding of safety codes, troubleshooting skills. A valid local journeyman or master electrician license is preferred.
- Installation and Repair: Install, maintain, alter, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, including panel boards, service equipment, circuit breakers, lighting systems (indoor and outdoor), motors, and fire alarm systems.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of breakdowns and correct problems. This can involve working with systems up to 480 volts.
- Safety and Compliance: Inspect electrical systems and equipment to identify hazards and ensure compliance with all applicable safety codes, including the National Electrical Code (NEC) and state/local regulations.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret blueprints, manufacturer's manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics to plan layouts and prepare material requirements.
- Maintenance Logs & Planning: Maintain detailed maintenance logs for all equipment, manage the completion of work orders, and estimate time and materials for jobs.
- Emergency Response: Respond to emergency electrical calls and assist with other maintenance duties as needed, which may require work during non-standard hours or during emergencies/office closings.
- Physical Demands: Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 75 pounds, bending, stooping, kneeling, and working from ladders, scaffolding, or mechanical lifts at various heights.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required, often supplemented by the satisfactory completion of a four-year electrical apprenticeship program.
- Licensing: A valid journey-level or master-level electrician license issued by the local jurisdiction.
- Experience: 2-5 years of progressively responsible experience in a commercial, industrial, or institutional setting is typically a minimum requirement.
- Technical Knowledge: Expertise in single- and three-phase power systems (up to 480v), low-voltage systems (fire alarms, security, intercom), building automation, and an understanding of electrical theory and load calculations.
- Soft Skills: Strong communication skills (oral and written) to coordinate with staff and administrators, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Other: A valid PA motor vehicle license is required, in addition to required clearances such as State Police, Child Abuse, and FBI Background Checks (prior to employment).
