Primary Purpose:  Manage and direct all aspects of the district color guard program. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular color guard activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Assist in activities designed to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of current trends, techniques, and instructional strategies in color guard
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing color guard and extracurricular activities
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures 
  • Ability to manage inventory and personnel as assigned
  • Ability to interpret data and read music
  • Effective organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Dance and Color Guard Training
  • Basic Computer skills

 

Experience:

  • Experience working with children
  • Experience with teaching and performing with color guard equipment

Major Responsibilities and Duties:  

Program Planning

  1. Plan and manage all aspects of the district color guard program including show design, costuming, and equipment needs.
  2. Plan and implement a comprehensive recruiting program for the color guard program. 
  3. Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate.
  4. Assist in implementation of color guard participation at extracurricular events, including football games, pep rallies, parades, UIL activities, and local and national winter guard circuits.
  5. Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
  6. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and board policy in the performing arts area.
  7. Support band booster club activities.
  8. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
  9. Recommend policies to improve the program.

Budget and Inventory

  1. Assist in compilation of budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  2. Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
  3. Assist in maintaining the current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  4. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, storing, and issuing all color guard equipment.

Instruction

  1. Develop and implement plans for the instruction of the color guard.
  2. Develop and implement plans for the color guard program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  3. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  4. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  5. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  6. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  7. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Student Management

  1. Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook(s).
  2. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain open and effective communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers, inclusive of newsletters, conferences, or other means of direct communication. 
  2. Maintain professional relationship and strong communication with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

Personnel Management

  1. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of color guard technicians and designers

Other

  1. Demonstrate a professional appearance and attitude
  2. Physically able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds
  3. Flexible and able to adjust daily routine; ability to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends, but must remain under 37.5 hours per week

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; color guard equipment

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Outdoor and indoor work; regular exposure to noise; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours

Other: Frequent district and occasional statewide travel
