Position Summary



The Director of Maintenance position manages general maintenance duties and provides leadership in the areas of facilities maintenance and repair; contract and vendor relations; campus cleanliness; structural integrity and safety; and campus purchasing for maintenance. The position supervises and directs maintenance and custodial personnel in full scope, multi-trade facilities, maintenance, and service activities to include comprehensive evaluation and maintenance of building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire/life safety, and elevators.

POSTING DATE: SEPTEMBER 4, 2025

SALARY: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule C2 (range: $77,611 - $120,3461).

ANTICIPATED START DATE: OCTOBER 15, 2025

This position will be based initially at Wallace in Dothan, Alabama.

More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Facilities Maintenance & Operations
  • Lead maintenance staff across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, and other trades.
  • Develop and manage preventative maintenance plans.
  • Oversee all maintenance activities using the college’s work order system.
  • Provide technical guidance and direct emergency repairs.
  • Interpret blueprints, policies, and job orders to assign work effectively.
  • Schedule routine maintenance activities (e.g., painting, pressure washing, pest control).
Supervision & Personnel Management
  • Assign tasks, manage workflow, and maintain adequate coverage, including during holidays or emergencies.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities.
  • Manage staff schedules, approve leave requests, and handle disciplinary actions.
  • Support employee growth through coaching, training, and travel support for conferences.
  • Coordinate work with external contractors as needed.
Contract & Vendor Management
  • Prepare estimates and documentation for maintenance, service, and construction contracts.
  • Monitor contractor performance, certify work completion, and approve invoices.
  • Ensure compliance with Alabama Bid Law, Public Works Law, and Building Commission procedures.
  • Coordinate safety and fire inspections with local authorities.
Budget & Resource Management
  • Manage program budgets, submit annual allocation requests, and approve expenditures.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor maintenance and custodial budgets.
  • Procure materials, supplies, and services efficiently.
  • Track expenditures and adjust budgets based on needs.
  • Collaborate with Business Office on surplus sales and asset disposal.
Utility Services Oversight
  • Monitor utility usage and expenses.
  • Identify and implement efficiency improvements.
  • Ensure continuity of service and resolve outages promptly.
Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce safety protocols and complete incident reports.
  • Investigate hazards and ensure timely resolution.
  • Participate in college construction and renovation projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • Five (5) years’ supervisor experience in construction, facilities maintenance, or related engineering area is required.
  • Ability to work non-standard and extended hours is required.
  • Previous work experience in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Advanced certification in facilities maintenance/management such as Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Plant Engineer (CPE), Certified Educational Facilities Manager (CEFM), Certified Facilities Manager (CFM), Certified Project Manager (CPM), etc. is preferred.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE: The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interview, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.
