Position Summary

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for the leadership and coordination of the information technology (IT) services of the college, and has primary responsibility for short and long-range planning of the college’s technical infrastructure to ensure that it supports current and future technology, programming, and communications requirements. The position provides oversight to the management of the college’s computer software systems, servers, and networks, for the implementation and integration of enterprise systems and associated subsystems, and for IT instructional and operational support activities. The Director ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to institutional values and that standard practices and procedures are documented, accomplished, and appropriately maintained. This position provides training and technical assistance to all faculty and staff in the use of computers and technology for all college locations.


POSTING DATE: NOVEMBER 12, 2025


SALARY: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule C1 (range: $88,531 - $131,266).

ANTICIPATED START DATE: JANUARY 2, 2026

This position will be based initially at Wallace in Dothan, Alabama.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive, and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Leadership and Management. Supervises and directs departmental personnel in providing quality IT services .

  • Provides leadership, vision, and management to the ITS department.
  • Assist the Regional CIO with the coordination of technology needs for the college.
  • Functions in a team-oriented, collaborative environment, supporting and assisting employees.
  • Foster a customer service environment for fellow employees, students, and visitors.
  • Supervises Departmental staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, establishing work flow standards, assigning work, and other personnel actions to ensure productivity and quality standards are maintained.
  • Provides staff with regular feedback based on their ongoing job performance; conducts annual staff performance evaluations.
  • Coaches and counsels employees appropriately to enhance development, productivity, and morale.
  • Resolves or assists in the resolution of problems/issues relating to information technology services and related systems.
  • Provides appropriate training and professional development opportunities for department staff and College faculty and staff.
  • Conducts meetings with Department staff to discuss changes in policies or procedures, solicit input or recommendations, and review overall Departmental performance.
  • Ensures all System Network/Administrators are sufficiently cross-trained to provide redundant expertise on all College technologies, systems, and software.
  • Facilitates appropriate collaboration between departmental functions to affect optimal utilization and efficiency of resources and expertise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Strategic Planning. Develops short and long-range plans for the IT and telecommunications infrastructurein support of the mission of the College.

  • Determines information system requirements, project priorities, and system capability.
  • Meets with College administration and staff to assess IT requirements and instructional technology needs.
  • Assesses new computing technologies and the feasibility of system enhancements to determine potential value for the College.
  • Solicits input from Department Heads/Supervisors regarding the implications, effects, and development of new information system policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains the College’s Technology Plan, Information Security Plan, and Disaster Recovery Plan in relation to data security and business continuity.
  • Submits the College’s Technology Plan for review and approval by Administrative Council annually.
  • Develops, reviews, and certifies all backup and disaster recovery procedures and plans.
  • Establishes and maintains a continuity of operations plan documenting the essential functions to be performed in the event of an emergency or crisis.
  • Monitors and reviews projects to ensure that all deadlines are met and that the end product meets quality standards.
  • Analyze complex business needs presented by users to recommend technical solutions.
  • Develop plans for implementation of new projects and coordinate process with project leaders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Department Operations. Oversees all Department operations to ensure high-quality IT services are provided to staff and students.

  • Manages the daily operations of the information technology department related to planning, deployment, and maintenance of all the College’s information systems, telecommunication systems, media equipment and systems, servers and server management, classroom and instructional technology, and technical support.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the college computer network, including installation, repair, or replacement of network hardware and cabling. Oversees the development, design, and implementation of new applications and changes to existing computer systems and software packages.
  • Assign priorities to all issues processed for technical assistance through ticketing software.
  • Maintain and update the computer replacement plan for the college.
  • Maintain records to ensure compliance with licensing policies for computer software.
  • Assist in preparing bids for computer equipment when required.
  • Oversees IT related aspects of all College construction and renovation projects.
  • Oversees the development and/or acquisition of computer applications or operating systems software and reviews and approves design documentation for new and changed systems to ensure all requirements are achieved.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact on application/system programming or data processing projects with College departments and meets with customer representatives regularly on project status to provide effective coordination.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards related to information systems, hardware and software acquisition, IT accessibility and use, hardware and software maintenance and support, system availability and security, and data integrity and backup.
  • Oversees and provides system security through the development, deployment, and maintenance of user logins, passwords, and other security related procedures.
  • Oversees the overall planning and development of budgets for IT related services.
  • Develops departmental budgets to address the anticipated needs of user/client departments and internal needs; prepares strategies for system upgrades and conversions, and applications development and maintenance.
  • Develops and manages vendor relationships to ensure contracts and maintenance agreements are current for College technology and systems.
  • Responds to auditor findings and management requests to implement recommendations and provide information; serves on various evaluation/planning committees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: General Operations. Oversees Department daily operations, performing administrative duties, and directing staff activities associated with all aspects of the Department.

  • Works cooperatively with the Dean, Business Affairs, to ensure daily operations are efficient, accurate, and timely.
  • Monitors information technology operations and complaints in order to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of operations and identifies problems that need to be addressed.
  • Provide leadership in streamlining work processes and policies to ensure the College’s services and systems are effective and efficient.
  • Interacts with system users to understand their needs; designs systems to support their requirements.
  • Queries data from system data servers to fulfill department requests.
  • Maintains knowledge of ITS technology, trends, and innovations and their impact on the College’s IT systems and infrastructure.
  • Travels as needed between the Campuses and sites of the College.
  • Coordinate workshops and/or individualized training for all personnel of the College affected by system changes, such as hardware or software upgrades or enhancements.
  • Serves on various College committees as a member or in an advisory capacity as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: System Security. Designs, implements, and administers an effective system for safeguarding the College’s data system from internal and external attack.

  • Designs, implements, administers, and monitors appropriate protocols to ensure that the College’s digital information is effectively protected against breach and intrusion.
  • Monitors the Active Directory to ensure that appropriate authorities are granted, maintained, and protected.
  • Implements effective internal controls and protocols to ensure that work within systems and networks can be readily traced to those persons performing the work.
  • Ensures that the College’s firewall is protected from breach, intrusion, and tampering.
  • Implements effective internal controls and protocols to ensure that the College’s email and telephone systems are protected from breach and intrusion.
  • Ensure that the system and the network are secure and that valuable or sensitive data is protected from undesired access.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations. Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.
  • Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  • Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology related curriculum or closely related field from an accredited institution is required.
  • Five (5) years’ experience managing IT operations is required.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in managing personnel is required.
  • Ability to work non-standard and extended hours is required.
  • Previous work experience in an educational setting is preferred.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE: The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interview, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.
