Position Summary

Under the supervision of the division director, associate dean, and/or Dean, Instructional Affairs, the Instructor teaches students according to established policies and procedures to provide competent and effective classroom and laboratory instruction at varied times and places based on student demand.


SALARY:
Adjunct instructors in the academic fields are paid $663.00 per credit hour taught, not to exceed 19 hours per week. Compensation for substitute instructors may vary depending on the duration of the instructional assignment and the instructional division within the College. Appropriate compensation arrangements for substitute instructors will be determined by the College.
Part-time positions are posted based on the possible availability of a future assignment, which is sporadic and may not occur. Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and instructional needs of the College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive, and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Instruction. Provide competent classroom and laboratory instruction in the area of credentialed expertise.

  • Displays an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field or discipline.
  • Connects their subject matter with related fields.
  • Teaches a course load appropriate to their field or discipline.
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning.
  • Employs appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
  • Modifies, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.

  • Encourages the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
  • Contributes to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.

  • Incorporates core competencies into program or discipline content.
  • Develops, updates, and posts course syllabi in a timely manner.
  • Uses instructional time wisely to meet course objectives.
  • Stays current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Student Learning. Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to institutional, divisional, departmental, and individual criteria.

  • Establishes meaningful learning student learning outcomes for courses/programs.
  • Develops and explains methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
  • Evaluates student performance fairly and consistently and returns student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
  • Returns student assignments and tests in a timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate records of student progress and submits final grade rosters each semester according to established deadlines.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
  • Maintain action plans based on data to support constant and never-ending improvement in the instructional process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Support of College Policies and Procedures. Performs other department activities to ensure efficient, high-quality services are provided to WCC.

  • Teaches classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment as needed.
  • Posts and maintains regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for advisement and consultation.
  • Serves as faculty advisor within the current College advisement system.
  • Prepares, distributes, and submits syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • Substitutes for other instructors within the field or discipline in case of an absence.
  • Exercises stewardship of College facilities and materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Participation in College, Division, and Program Activities. Performs other department activities to ensure efficient, high-quality services are provided to WCC.

  • Serves on college, divisional, and program committees as assigned.
  • Participates in meetings and events required by the college, division, and program administrators.
  • Responds in a timely fashion to information requests from college, division, and program administrators.
  • Supports both part-time and full-time colleagues.
  • Contributes to program and division curriculum development processes.
  • Participates in graduation ceremonies.
  • Provides attendance data as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Contribution to Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs. Promote positive and productive relationships with service area businesses, industries, and agencies.

  • Maintains familiarity with College goals, mission, and long-range plans.
  • Contributes to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels.
  • Participates in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College and its constituents.
  • Performs professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the College, division, and program.
  • Participates in the marketing, recruitment, and retention of students, faculty, and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Professional Development. Continue as a competent instructor in the chosen specialty by seeking new knowledge, improving teaching skills, and updating professional competencies.

  • Updates knowledge and skills in the subject matter field and instructional abilities.
  • Remains current in teaching discipline by one or more of the following methods:
    a. attending workshops, continuing education programs, practicums, and academic courses;
    b. engaging in individual self-study;
    c. actively participating in professional organizations.
  • Sets professional goals for each rating period.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations. Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.

  • Reports to work on time, at the appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  • Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Performs a productive full day's work.
  • Ensures that service to students and the general public is the top priority.
  • Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful, and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  • Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • A master's degree from an accredited institution with a major in Political Science or a related field is required.
    OR
    A master's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Political Science or a related field is required.
  • Postsecondary teaching experience, including the use of online learning management systems, is preferred.
  • Experience incorporating multi-media instructional techniques into curricula, including instructional technology for web-based teaching and course management utilizing the Blackboard platform, is preferred.
  • Experience inspiring and facilitating learning with diverse student populations is preferred.


Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and the instructional needs of the College.
