PURPOSE STATEMENT

This position is responsible for providing professional health care to students and staff to prevent, identify, and/or remediate health problems which may impair learning, social adjustment, or emotional well-being of students.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Assess the physical, mental, and environmental health needs of students as they relate to the educational environment in accordance with state and local mandates.
  2. Provide primary health care to students including initial assessment, management of illness and /or referral to other health professionals, monitoring of chronic diseases, health supervision, and promotion of health life-styles, disease prevention, and the coordination of services when specialized care is required.
  3. Serve as a health advocate of students and a consultant to educational staff.
  4. Create, implement and monitor appropriate health plans to meet the medical, health, and safety needs of students for designated schools.
  5. Delegate select health services to designated school employees in accordance with current mandates.
  6. Responsible for ongoing training and competency evaluation of the non-licensed personnel to safeguard the health and welfare of the students in their care.
  7. Provide orientation, training and monitoring of Health Room Assistants. Provide continued oversight of medication administration, documentation, maintenance of health care records and immunization forms, and health plan monitoring of assigned buildings.
  8. Regulate and dispense prescribed medication and/or treatments as required.
  9. Provide health counseling and guidance to students, school personnel and parents, to include communicating with non-English speaking students and their parents as needed.
  10. Provide consultant services to administrators in planning for the prevention and control of communicable diseases, first aid in acute illness or injury, disaster preparedness, and safety and sanitation in the assigned building.
  11. Perform vision and hearing screening as required and in accordance with the Washington State Codes.
  12. Provide Health Clinic coverage in the absence of Health Room Assistants.
  13. Cultivate and model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  1. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  2. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports jointly to the Building Principal and the Director of Health Services.

MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
  • May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • May be required to transfer students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Current CPR/First Aid and AED certification
  • Valid Registered Nurse License for the State of Washington
  • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) credential for school nursing or willing to obtain

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
  • Excellent human relations, communication, and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Computerized record keeping skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize student needs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with assigned Health Room Assistants.
  • Ability to maintain state/federal special education compliance requirements including timelines involving special needs or medically fragile students.
  • Ability to develop, organize, and maintain comprehensive student health care plans.
  • Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies.
  • Required to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using both English and Spanish preferred.

Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Schoool Nurse - RN on the Teacher Salary Schedule

Seven and a half (7.5) hours per day, five (5) days per week, 182 days per school year; Retirement, SEEB Benefits, Paid Sick Leave
