PURPOSE STATEMENT

This position is responsible for providing critical links between school and home, advocating student needs, and acting as a liaison with social services agencies. The intervention specialist will conduct home visits, work with students, and keep parents in close communication with the school.

Essential Functions

  • Collaboratively work with classroom teachers, support staff and administration to best meet the needs of students.
  • Perform building coordinator duties for a variety of district-wide programs such as PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), Second Steps/Steps to Respect, and the Homeless program.
  • Participate on a variety of building and district-wide committees such as the PBIS Committee, Interagency Truancy Committee, Student Teacher Assistance Team and Safety Committee.
  • Instruct small groups or individual students in a variety of learning activities, including new student connections, ART training, Anti-Bullying prevention, student organizational skills, etc. Train and supervise student conflict managers.
  • Conduct home visits and make necessary connections with parents.
  • Build relationships and act as liaison with families in transition.
  • Perform paperwork and administrative duties as necessary for required programs.
  • Assist staff with the development of classroom contracts.
  • Provide resources and act as a link between families and community services; advocate for student needs.
  • Work as a member of a school-based team coordinating a variety of services to students and families.
  • Assist students with a variety of issues including transportation, clothing, student life, and strengthening family connections.
  • Assist with student supervision in areas designated by building administrator (ex: lunch supervision, patrol duty, ISS). Build relationships with students and parents during these designated times.
  • Assist parents with implementation of school assigned programs and parenting skills.
  • Promote positive public relations when communicating with students, parents, social services agencies and the public.

Other Functions

  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to the building administrator.

MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Required to deal with a wide range of student, parent, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
  • May experience shifts in work schedule or work site according to district needs.
  • Will frequently deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Amount of standing, sitting and walking will vary depending on assignments.
  • Requires ability to drive and the mobility to visit homes and community agencies.
  • May be required to lift, move or carry students up to 100 pounds.
  • May require restraint certification and ability to use restraint protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Degree or related experience in social work, human services, counseling, psychology, or similar field preferred.
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences.
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferred.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
  • Ability to be trained in Right Response restraint certification.
  • Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Possess the desire to be a role model for students and to interact positively with students.
  • Flexible; able to work independently in both the school and home setting with students and parents.
  • Skills necessary to effectively teach behavior management, social skills, conflict management, and self-esteem to students in small groups.
  • Ability to be fair and consistent when working with students.
  • Computer and record keeping skills.
  • Required to maintain confidentiality.

Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Required to attend training for de-escalation procedures.
  • May require a CPR/First Aid card depending on job assignment.
  • Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Intervention Specialist on the PSE Classified Salary Schedule A
  • Eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week, 189 days per school year, PSE Salary Schedule, Retirement, SEBB Benefits, 9 Holidays, Paid Sick Leave
