PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Migrant Specialist will identify, recruit, and enroll eligible K-12 migrant students residing in the district and will act as a liaison to maintain positive communication between migrant families and the schools. This position will oversee academic services provided to migrant students and work with district instructional staff to ensure migrant needs are met.

Essential Functions

  • Recruit and help register migrant students for school programs with understanding of federal and state regulations pertaining to eligibility criteria for identification and recruitment.
  • Assist in communicating with migrant families and students to include translating and interpreting when needed.
  • Disseminate and explain schedules, transportation, and school lunch programs to migrant students and families.
  • Assist with personal, academic, and career guidance to migrant students and families in a language they understand.
  • Serve as a liaison between the schools and the migrant families in the district; communicate school-family social problems.
  • Conduct home visits on behalf of the staff or district to relay messages to the migrant families relating to health, attendance, grades, after school opportunities, etc.
  • Attend and translate at parent-teacher conferences or meetings for migrant students and parents.
  • Provide individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, and language acquisition.
  • Inform families of and facilitate access to available community services; assist in coordination of services.
  • Collect and compile required documents and reports accurately and promptly.
  • Recommend curriculum enrichment for migrant students.
  • Assist with the assessment of migrant students; integrate assessment data with curriculum for the academic achievement of migrant students.
  • Attend student intervention team meetings teams when a migrant child is involved.
  • Assist Bilingual Education Director with Migrant Education Grant Application and End of Year reports.
  • Provide professional development training opportunities to K-12 staff to enhance teacher understanding of migrant children.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Director of Equity and Dual Programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Minimum requirement of 2 years of College, Community College or equivalent.
  • Experience with school and community Latino activities and programs preferred.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish required.
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
  • Commitment and ability to work with full range of students, staff, families and community members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents in both English and Spanish.
  • Ability to work independently in scheduling activities with families and students.
  • Ability to conduct interviews accurately and skillfully in order to determine program eligibility.
  • Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies; knowledge of pertinent services for qualifying families and students preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state law, administrative rules, and board policy preferred.
  • Possess the desire to be a role model for students and to interact positively with students.
  • Flexible; able to work independently in both the school and home setting with students and parents.
  • Basic computer and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Required to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule as evening and occasional weekend meetings are required position activities.

Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Completed Employment Application/Background Check
  • Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire

PAY LEVEL

  • Intervention Specialist on the PSE Classified Salary Schedule A
  • Seven (7) hours per day, five (5) days per week, 199 days per school year, PSE Salary Schedule, Retirement, SEBB Benefits, 9 Holidays, Paid Sick Leave
