Walla Walla County Rural Library District – Districtwide Substitute Library Assistant
Characteristics: Under the direction of the Branch Operations Coordinator, the Districtwide Substitute Library Assistant is responsible for working as part of the staff team to support circulation and customer service functions. The assistant works as a main point of contact at the front desk and aids in circulation duties, shelving, programming support, and other duties as needed. This position does not have set or guaranteed hours but rather is called upon to fill in at District library branches for planned and unplanned absences of staff. Candidates must have reliable personal transportation that would allow them to work at District branches across Walla Walla County (Burbank, College Place, Prescott, Touchet, and Vista Hermosa). This position is based out of the Administrative Center in Walla Walla.
General Performance Requirements:
- Able to lift moderate weights (up to 35 pounds) at frequent intervals
- Advanced computer skills
- Competent with Microsoft Office
- Confident in learning to navigate new programs, devices, and interfaces
- Able to conduct internet and catalog searches using boolean functions
Expectations and Responsibilities:
- Circulation and customer service duties, such as:
- Cash handling
- Checking materials in and out
- Preparing items for circulation
- Repairing damaged items
- Answering phones
- Maintaining email correspondence
- Directing patrons to materials and services
- Other clerical and circulation duties as needed
- Shelve returned materials
- Assist with programming as needed
- Utilize a variety of print and electronic resources to direct patrons and answer questions
- Provide high quality library assistance to patrons and staff, including:
- Knowledge and implementation of ALA, ARSL, and WLA standards
- Knowledge of library classification and organization of materials
- Assistance with reference and readers advisory
- General promotion of library services, materials, and perspectives
- Handle multiple tasks with continual interruption while prioritizing patron and staff support
- Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of information
- Accept assignments from the branch supervisor
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate's Degree or equivalent relevant experience
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language
Preferred Qualifications:
- Conversational in Spanish language
Compensation:
- $17.13-19.86/hour
