Summary of position: The Walker School is seeking a Long-Term Substitute Special Education Teacher for their Day School program located in Needham, MA. Under the direction of an Education Coordinator, the Long-Term Substitute SPED Teacher will be responsible for a classroom of up to nine students with social, emotional, learning, and behavioral disabilities. The Long-Term Substitute SPED Teacher will implement the academic, behavioral, and social curriculum in the classroom under the supervision of an Education Coordinator. Education and Licensure Required: Bachelor’s degree in related field; ability to attain a Waiver in MA Moderate Disabilities PreK-8 licensure within first 90 days of employment in this role. Preferred: Master’s degree in Special Education or related field; MA licensure in Moderate Disabilities PreK-8. Experience: Required: Experience working with children with complex social, emotional, and behavioral challenges Preferred: Experience as a Special Education Teacher Abilities Required mental abilities: Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and safely. Ability to work in a stressful and fast paced environment. Must understand child development and the impact of emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities. Must understand issues of confidentiality. Must be receptive to supervision and professional development. Required physical abilities: Ability to work and stand for extended period of time. Job may require bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting. Job requires the ability to perform therapeutic physical intervention as needed. Essential functions: 1.Work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to further the emotional, behavioral, and educational development of children. 2.Implement sequential units of study that make learning cumulative, connect learning across disciplines, and are based on the learning standards within the curriculum frameworks. 3.With lesson plans provided, prepare materials necessary for daily instruction, maintaining clear, reasonable standards and expectations for students in all academic subjects. 4.Provide multi-sensory, multi-modal, varied opportunities for learning that are built on students’ prior knowledge and experience to build academic and social skills. 5.Collaborate with an Education Coordinator to provide updates about student progress, to inform their writing of progress reports and IEPs. 6.Maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and effectively manage the behavior of students in small and large groups. 7.Apply Walker’s model of childcare, including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), which requires physical restraint when necessary, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, cooperative group games, and behavioral support. 8.Implement treatment protocol and appropriate therapeutic strategies established in children’s treatment plans, IEPs, and individual support plans. 9.Meet children’s physical needs and provide a safe and therapeutic environment for children. 10.Participate fully in the administrative functions of teaching and child care, including attending and participating in required meetings, completing assigned report writing tasks in a timely manner, and actively communicating with families and members of the students’ multidisciplinary team. 11.Actively participate in supervision and professional development opportunities offered at Walker. 12.Lead classroom team and promote positive and effective teamwork and problem solving. 13.Lead team in maintaining points/time-out database and weekly log notes. 14.Follow and implement all Walker policies and procedures. 15.All other duties as assigned.
