Role Overview

Gardeners perform all aspects of landscape and garden installation, horticultural services, and maintenance. This role also contributes to the evolution of our planting design and plant sourcing—particularly in annuals, perennials, and container compositions—while collaborating closely with our gardening team to elevate the quality, diversity, and expression of our work.

You will play a key role in shaping our seasonal plant offerings, refining container design, and maintaining the health and organization of nursery stock.

You will:

  • Execute projects from start to finish, ensuring deadlines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
  • Collaborate closely with a skilled field team on a variety of landscape and garden projects.
  • Contribute to the design and installation of annual, perennial, and container plantings, with an eye toward beauty, seasonality, and ecological integrity.
  • Help evolve Walkabout’s container design program, bringing creativity, refinement, and consistency across projects.
  • Assist in expanding plant sourcing and trade accounts, building relationships with growers and suppliers to diversify and improve our plant palette.
  • Support the selection, procurement, and organization of plant material, including substitutions when needed.
  • Oversee the care and organization of nursery stock, ensuring plant health, proper watering, staging, and readiness for installation.
  • Serve as a point of contact on-site for clients during active jobs, ensuring tactful, solutions-oriented communication.
  • Proactively identify and address issues to maintain quality products and smooth workflow.
  • Organize and secure tools, materials, inventory, and equipment.
  • Maintain flexibility in scheduling during bottlenecks, absences, or project changes.
  • Keep detailed daily reports and maintain consistent communication with management, crew, and clients.

Key Skill Areas

Landscaping & Hardscaping

  • Soil grading, drainage installation, site prep, sod cutting, rototilling, mini track-loader operation.
  • Garden and landscape tear-outs, tree/shrub removal, site cleanup.
  • Assisting with minor hardscape installations and application of joint sand.

Gardening & Horticulture

  • Plant layout and installation according to design plans.
  • Strong interest and experience in fine gardening including annuals, perennials, and container design.
  • Soil assessment, amendment selection, and mulch recommendations.
  • Plant identification, care requirements, pest identification, and ecological awareness.
  • Seasonal planting design and maintenance with attention to succession and long-term performance.

Plant Sourcing & Nursery Management

  • Interest in developing relationships with nurseries and plant suppliers.
  • Assisting in expanding Walkabout’s plant palette and sourcing strategy.
  • Care, staging, and organization of nursery stock to maintain plant health and readiness.

Irrigation & Lighting

  • Reading and implementing irrigation and lighting plans.
  • Installing and maintaining system components (valves, lines, sprinklers, drip systems, micro emitters).
  • Troubleshooting issues independently.
  • Performing irrigation audits and creating site-specific schedules by hydrozone.

Ecology

  • Applying ecological principles to garden design and maintenance.
  • Staying curious and engaged with environmental and horticultural research, sharing knowledge with the team.

Leadership & Values

  • Collaborate with team members of varying skill levels to complete installation and maintenance projects.
  • Contribute ideas that improve design quality, plant diversity, and operational efficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of hands-on perennial gardening experience, ideally with exposure to planting design.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in container design and seasonal plant compositions.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to make independent decisions in the field.
  • Interest in plant sourcing, nursery relationships, or expanding plant offerings.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate equipment.

  • Pay: $24 /hour DOQ

Schedule

Full-time, 40–50 hrs/week, Monday–Friday, with occasional weekends during peak periods (mid-March through mid-December).
