What are the responsibilities and job description for the WMHS Musical Choreographer position at Wakefield Memorial High School?
Position Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative Choreographer to design and teach original choreography for our Fall 2026 high school musical. The choreographer will work closely with the Director, Music Director, and production team to create engaging, age-appropriate movement that enhances storytelling and showcases student performers of varying skill levels. The ideal candidate will be available 2-3 sessions per week (September and October) and available daily in the two weeks leading up to the performance (starting November 2).
Key Responsibilities
- Design and teach choreography for all musical numbers, including ensemble and featured dances
- Adapt choreography to suit a wide range of student abilities and experience levels
- Lead and manage dance rehearsals in coordination with the overall rehearsal schedule
- Collaborate with the Director and Music Director to ensure cohesive artistic vision
- Provide clear instruction, feedback, and encouragement to student performers
- Ensure choreography is appropriate for a school setting (age-appropriate and inclusive)
- Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals
- Assist with casting decisions as they relate to movement/dance ability
- Maintain a safe rehearsal environment, including proper warm-ups and injury prevention practices
Qualifications
- Experience choreographing musical theater, dance, or related performances (educational settings preferred)
- Strong knowledge of a variety of dance styles (e.g., jazz, musical theater, hip-hop, tap, or contemporary)
- Ability to teach and communicate effectively with high school students
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Collaborative mindset and willingness to adapt to production needs
- Availability for scheduled rehearsals and performances
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working in a school or youth theater program
- Background in dance education or certification in dance/theater
- Experience working with large ensemble casts
Compensation
- Stipend: $2500-$3500, pending schedule availability
