Position Title: Migrant Student Advocate for Summer Learning Program
Report To: Migrant & Multicultural Program Director, Summer School Site Coordinators
Classification: FLSA Non-Supervisory, Non-Exempt
Compensation: Non-Represented Salary Schedule for Migrant Student Advocate
This position is paid by time card submitted by the 10th of each month.
The 2026 Wahluke Summer School Model is to provide in-person instruction to Kinder-8th grade students in reading, mathematics and enrichment, while fostering academic growth, building student confidence, and creating engaging learning experiences that prepare students for success in the upcoming school year.
Migrant Summer Program Information:
Professional Development: TBD
Class Schedule: June 22 - July 28, 2026
Hours of Operation: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday-Thursday (daily schedule/hours to be determined)
*Home visits outside of the regular schedule for additional hours.
The advocate will:
- Work with the district’s Migrant Education Federal Programs director, site coordinators at both schools and school staff to identify and establish program and student goals in alignment with the district’s local plan and the State Service Delivery Plan.
- Provide supplemental support and services focused on meeting the unique needs of migratory students.
- Coordinate services with other resources migratory students may be eligible and entitled to receive.
Requirements:
- AA Degree preferred, in areas such as human development, human services, family support, social work, or another field directly related to the job responsibilities as a student and parent advocate.
- High School Diploma required
- Bilingual and Biliterate in English and Spanish required.
- Successful experience working with migrant farm worker youth and families.
- Experience in an educational or community advocacy-related field.
- Experience working with at-risk migrant students and families.
- Knowledge of secondary school programs and state and local graduation requirements.
- Written and verbal communication skills in English and primary language of target population (e.g., Spanish).
- Knowledge of basic computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience working semi-independently and in collaborative teams.
- Human relations, time management, and personal organizational skills.
- Flexible work schedule.
- Ability to solve practical problems, apply appropriate judgment and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Expected to attend work as scheduled and model appropriate professional behavior.
- Include other functions as related to the overall goals and outcomes in conjunction with the school program.
- Supervise students in halls, study halls, libraries, playgrounds, learning centers and transportation areas.
- May require work outdoors in all seasons with all types of weather.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience supporting summer educational programs.
- Knowledge of economic, social, cultural, and psychological factors influencing migrant students.
- Experience working with secondary school aged migrant students in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of school and community resources available to migrant students and families, including technical education, career awareness, and postsecondary education opportunities.
Major Responsibilities:
- Identify the barriers including educational disruption, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, various health-related problems, or other factors that inhibit the ability of selected migrant students to meet state academic and achievement standards.
- Assist building admin and office staff in ensuring student attendance for our migratory students.
- Coordinate access to services available through the school district and/or community to reduce and/or eliminate identified barriers.
- Coordinate access to services available through school district and/or community that strengthen communication, self-advocacy, and leadership skills.
- Conduct home visits to strengthen home-school connection and student engagement.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to strengthen skills in working with at-risk migrant students including motivational techniques and reporting requirements.
Physical Requirements: This position typically requires: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move can carry objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
