Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner serves as the facility's primary advanced practice provider and provides comprehensive healthcare services to inmates housed within the Wagoner County Detention Center. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, prescribing medications, managing chronic illnesses, responding to medical emergencies, and collaborating with detention staff and healthcare personnel to ensure appropriate patient care.
The Nurse Practitioner is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing medical protocols, clinical guidelines, and standards of care for nursing staff. This position provides clinical leadership and support to a 24/7 nursing team while practicing in accordance with Oklahoma law and maintaining the highest professional standards of practice.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Treatment
- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments and medical evaluations
- Diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests and laboratory results
- Develop and implement treatment plans
- Prescribe medications and therapies within scope of practice
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as needed
Clinical Leadership & Oversight
- Develop, implement, and maintain medical protocols, standing orders, and clinical guidelines for nursing staff
- Provide clinical consultation and support to LPNs during routine and emergent situations
- Review patient care, treatment plans, and medication management practices for quality and compliance
- Ensure nursing staff operate within their scope of practice and according to established protocols
- Assist with training, education, and competency development of healthcare staff
Correctional Healthcare Services
- Provide routine and emergency medical care to inmates
- Evaluate inmate health complaints and requests for medical attention
- Manage chronic disease programs and follow-up care
- Assist with intake medical screenings and health assessments
- Coordinate outside specialty care and hospital referrals when necessary
- Collaborate with detention staff to ensure safe and appropriate patient care
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records
- Document assessments, treatments, and patient encounters
- Ensure compliance with applicable healthcare regulations and standards
- Protect patient confidentiality while operating within correctional guidelines
- Prepare reports and documentation as required
Collaboration & Leadership
- Work collaboratively with nurses, detention staff, mental health providers, physicians, specialists, and community healthcare partners
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and healthcare planning
- Promote a safe, professional, and patient-centered healthcare environment
Physical Requirements
This position may require:

- Maintaining composure and professionalism during emergencies
The Nurse Practitioner must be able to function effectively in a correctional setting while exercising sound clinical judgment and maintaining professional standards of care.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Oklahoma
- Possess current DEA registration and prescriptive authority as required
- Possess a valid driver's license
- Pass a background investigation
- Have no felony convictions
- Demonstrate good moral character and professional integrity
- Possess strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Be able to work independently while collaborating effectively with healthcare and detention staff
- Possess Independent Practice Licensure in Oklahoma or be eligible to obtain independent practice authority under Oklahoma law
