What are the responsibilities and job description for the Professional Experienced Dog Trainer position at Wagging Tails Pet Resort, Inc.?

It's a ruff job, but someone's got to do it! If you are an energetic, friendly, responsible and an EXPERIENCED Dog Trainer, we would like to talk to you about joining our pack. We are seeking someone for full time, flexible schedule but you must be available to work days and evenings and weekends! You must love dogs and have great dog and people skills. You must have at least 1 year of direct, recent professional dog training experience. To be a part of our team, you must be great with animals and people, listen to the owners' comments and concerns for how they want their pet to benefit from training and then use that knowledge to ensure all our guests get the training they require. In this position as a dog trainer, you will be responsible for teaching our scheduled training sessions with our dog clients. As any employee at WTPR, the expectation is that you will conduct yourself professionally and with genuine compassion for our customers and four-legged guests at all times. The staff is friendly and we all work as a team. No harsh handling techniques are permitted. If this sounds like you, come join our pack!

JOB DUTIES:

  • Ability to assess dog behavior and appropriately recognize behavior that would not be safe or appropriate in the WTPR environment
  • Must be excited to meet with our new clients, taking detailed history of behavior issues while determining specific needs and activities that may lead to the best positive training outcome
  • Manage dogs of all sizes, breeds and temperaments
  • Act as a mentor to dog handlers in assessment of dog body language, positive training methods, management of groups of dogs, dog safety, safe behavior intervention techniques
  • Self-motivated and can work with minimal supervision.
  • Be detail oriented in a “fast-paced” work environment.
  • Must have excellent time management skills.
  • Treat each pet with respect and decency.
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with the team and pet owner.
  • Work well in a team setting.
  • Always act and dress in a professional and work appropriate manner.
  • Be able to multi-task and have strong attention to detail.
  • Be reliable and on time for work.

  • Maintain a Clean, Safe, and Fun working environment.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIRMENTS

  • MUST have open, flexible availability, INCLUDING weekends
  • At least 1 year experience training animals, either in group or one-on-one format, as lead or main trainer/instructor, within the last 3 years; references required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management and multitasking skills
  • Ability to sit, bend, squat, walk quickly and stand for up to 8 hours.
  • Ability to lift, pull, push or restrain up to 60lbs.
  • A good working knowledge of computers and the ability to learn software quickly.

And if needed you must be willing to:

  • Care for and manage up to 30 dogs of varying temperaments
  • Monitor social time in play yards.
  • Learn names and common behaviors of each dog and manage them accordingly.
  • Use basic obedience commands for manners reminders and dog handling.
  • Detect, discourage and manage overly excited, aggressive, or inappropriate behavior.
  • Ensure dogs are safe when being exercised and socialized during playtime.
  • Report issues or bad behavior to manager.
  • Immediately report injuries or health related issues to manager and front desk.
  • Reward dogs for good behavior.
  • Discourage jumping, pulling on leash, barking, growling, aggression, etc.
  • Manage arousal levels of all dogs in your care.
  • Keep accurate records.
  • Feed dogs and keep them healthy.
  • Create and be a part of a fun environment.
  • Play with dogs in a way that stimulates them and be a part of a fun, dynamic group of dogs.
  • Keep the play yard clean and poop free.
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and sanitizing kennels and kennel equipment.
  • Emptying trash cans and poop bins.
  • Disinfect facility and yards per the task list schedules.
  • Wash and clean kennel and play equipment per the task list schedules.
  • Maintain a clean and well-kept facility per the task list schedules.
  • Anything else Wagging Tails deems necessary.
