Primary Purpose:

Assist in the management and leadership of district police department personnel. Coordinate support in the daily operations to maintain safe environments for students, staff, and visitors on district owned or leased facilities. Enforce all applicable ordinances and laws as well as police department General Orders, policies, directives, and standards of district. Provide direct oversight of all activities related to criminal investigations.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

GED/High School diploma, college preferred

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Advanced Peace Officer Certification

TCOLE Certified Field Training Officer

TCOLE Certified First-Line Supervisor

TCOLE Certified Instructors' License preferred

Valid Texas Class C Driver's license

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Proficient in preparing and writing criminal justice related reports

Proficient keyboarding skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Minimum Experience:

At least five years of experience as a full-time paid police officer

At least two years of police supervisor experience at the rank of sergeant or above

At least two years of criminal investigation experience (preferred)

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Function as a peace officer and aid citizens when appropriate.

  2. Maintain an understanding of current federal, state and local laws as they pertain to activities of the WISD Police department.

  
  3. Supervise personnel assigned to Criminal Investigation Division (CID), including personnel with dual responsibilities related to the Gang Liaison program, crime scene technicians, and Property Room custodians.

  
  

  4. Respond to major crime scenes and direct personnel to take the appropriate steps to secure, document and thoroughly investigate all facts related to the case. In addition, conduct interviews of all parties involved.

  
  5. Ensure all investigations are conducted in a timely manner, and that the required documentation is professionally completed and forwarded to the appropriate district attorney's office.

  
  6. Responsible for all case management (reviews and approvals) related to follow-up investigations.

7. Reviews all follow-up investigations prior to assigning cases to a CID investigator.

8. Conducts internal complaint investigations as directed by the chief of police.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

1. Assist the chief of police in the supervision of personnel employed by Waco ISD police department.

2. Properly supervise employees under their command and ensure subordinates are supporting the mission of the Department and District.

3. Manage operations under their command and initiate action to correct or eliminate problems or discrepancies that come to their attention.

4. Provide proper training and instructions to all employees assigned under their command.

5. Answer all job-related questions asked by their subordinates. If a supervisor does not know the answer to a question, they will find the answer and give the employee a reply within a reasonable period of time.

6. Assist subordinates with their regular duties as needed to successfully accomplish work assignments. This is especially important during peak periods, employee shortages, or any other time when the need exists.

7. Work in a positive manner with other supervisors to coordinate work processes and mediate employee issues.

8. Meet the specific professional expectations conveyed to each supervisor by the Chief of Police and/or Superintendent.

Standard police related equipment in addition to office equipment.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to all of the hazards of police work, therefore the Police Supervisor must be physically able to meet the challenges. Working inside and outside where daily contact with students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and others not related to WISD will occur. Work in all weather conditions and may be assigned to events that are scheduled at any time of the day or night. Required to carry a cell phone and to be available whenever called if physically able. A potential for being placed into a hazardous situation without warning that could require immediate physical reactions and/or legal use of force (that could include but not necessarily limited to physical defensive tactics and techniques, running, crawling, climbing, jumping, lifting, and use of firearms, etc.). Potential for working in adverse and/or under personal risks due to conditions related to weather, human behavior, and crisis situations. May be working in crowded situations (classrooms, campuses, stadiums, special event locations, etc.). May work alone and without the immediate assistance from other police and security personnel.
