Maintenance Technician – Wabash County Commissioners
Wabash County is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Technician to help care for and improve county buildings and grounds. In this role, you’ll work hands‑on across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and general facility maintenance to ensure safe, functional, and well‑maintained spaces for county employees and the public. What You’ll Do
- Support maintenance needs for the Sheriff’s Department and assist the Maintenance Supervisor as needed
- Help troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including lighting, switches, receptacles, conduit, and wiring
- Assist with plumbing repairs such as sweating copper, repairing drains, replacing fixtures, and clearing main lines
- Support HVAC maintenance, including troubleshooting systems, replacing belts and filters, and checking refrigerant levels
- Perform general carpentry and building repairs, including painting, wall repair, and replacing hardware and ceiling tiles
- Test and maintain fire systems, including pumps and alarm panels
- Maintain lawns, walkways, and outdoor areas; remove snow and ice during winter months
- Track and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and order replacements as needed
- Report major repair needs or equipment issues to supervisors
- Operate a wide range of tools and equipment safely and effectively
- Participate in a rotating 24‑hour on‑call schedule for emergency needs
- Perform other related duties as assigned
What You Bring
- High school diploma or HSE
- Experience in electrical and plumbing work
- At least 21 years of age
- Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including medical exam and drug screening
- Working knowledge of Symmons anti‑scald valves, Sloan valves, water heaters, fire sprinkler systems, and fire panels
- Understanding of safety procedures, sanitation requirements, and proper handling of chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides
- Ability to read and follow equipment manuals and product labels
· Skill in safely operating tools such as drills, saws, mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, buffers, and more
- Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, work at heights, kneel, bend, reach, and perform tasks in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, often under time constraints
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact respectfully with coworkers, vendors, and the public
- Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to county policies
- Ability to remain calm and respectful when interacting with occasionally irate individuals
- Willingness to serve on 24‑hour emergency call rotation
Work Environment
This role involves both indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions. You may encounter extreme temperatures, uneven terrain, chemicals, fumes, dust, noise, and heights. Safety procedures must be followed at all times.
