WPHW is a non-profit organization that serves four federally recognized tribes located in five communities:  the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Mi'kmaq, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, and the Penobscot Nation. Wabanaki traditions, language, and culture guide our approach and describe the ways we live in harmony with each other and the land we collectively share. Services are available to community members living on and off reservation across the State of Maine.

Position Summary:

Supports Organization by leading the Seven Generations Division, which encompasses youth leadership development, experiential learning, suicide prevention, and student success, veteran and elder support services. Supports programming to support community members from youth to adulthood that builds resilience and strengthens positive health outcomes, cultural identity and protective factors. Focusing on issues of public health, restorative practices, and social justice. Ensures effective curricular and programmatic development, implementation, and evaluation. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance to District-level youth departments, Tribal programs, elder & veterans programs, including facilitating or co-facilitating meeting/trainings 
  • Provide opportunities to Seven Generations team members for professional development  
  • Support Seven Generations team members with strategic planning for the division, division workplans and individual workplans 
  • Communicate effectively with community organizations, statewide staff and partners 
  • Being accountable to colleagues and outside partners for completion of tasks and responsibilities 
  • Cross-training and coaching fellow staff 
  • Maintain a positive problem-solving attitude, listening and respecting the competing demands of others and working toward the best solution for the team 
  • Measuring curricular and programmatic effectiveness and adapting accordingly 
  • Tracking and reporting on curricular and programmatic process and outcomes data 
  • Oversee budgets and staff time allocations 
  • Develop strategic plans for the division  
  • Work with the project directors to update funders on programming  
  • Meet with funders to update them on the status of the programs  
  • Plan and support site visits  
  • Complete grant reports 
  • Update the WPH Center Director weekly
  • Attend trainings and professional development opportunities 
  • Present on WPHW Seven Generations work to Tribal Leadership, Health Directors, Funders, and other program directors.  
  • Work with division directors to update and collaborate on programming happening in community  
  • Work with the grants team to find and write grants to support the program
  • Work with the Seven Generations team to help support inter-tribal youth gatherings, veterans programming, elder programming, project venture, etc.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or human services related field with 2-3 years’ experience OR 
  • 4-6 years required equivalent experience that includes demonstrated excellence and regular practice with positive youth development practices, workshop facilitation, teaching and learning with both adolescents and adult learners 
  • Experience in community organization/health promotion with previous work in tribal communities is required 
  • Deep familiarity with tribal communities; working with individuals with trauma 

    Skills and Qualifications Required:

    • Excellent organizational skills 
    • Proficient in interpersonal communication 
    • Experience planning and coordinating events  
    • Excellent knowledge of positive youth development, youth-adult partnerships, prevention and public health practices 
    • Preferred knowledge of restorative practices, social emotional learning, and/or social justice work in some combination. 
    • Facilitation and training skills with both youth and adults in multiple settings 
    • Ability to create inclusive programming while effectively using trauma informed approaches 
    • Ability to manage concurrent projects 
    • Competent working with multiple partners and soliciting input 
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
    • Must be willing to travel for some overnight and trainings and events 
    • Must have a valid Maine Driver’s license, must be insurable on the organization’s auto insurance plan and have access to reliable transportation 
    • Must pass criminal background check
