We are seeking a full-time teacher's assistant for our GSRP preschool classroom inside Shepherd Elementary! This position will begin the 26/27 school year on August 17th, 2026. We will begin hosting interviews for this position during the week of July 13th, 2026 until the position is filled.
About Us
The Winn Area Activity Center (WAAC) is a nonprofit organization that provides preschool and school-age programs in three local elementary schools- Beal City Elementary, Shepherd Elementary, and Winn Elementary. Founded in 1998, our mission is to provide safe, high quality, and fun opportunities for the children in our care.
About the Position
Candidates must have at least a high school diploma and must be able to pass a comprehensive background check. Our desired preschool program assistant is kind, nurturing and a team player. Program assistants help the lead teacher & associate teacher in providing high quality, safe, and fun programming for our students ages 3-5 years old.
Preschool staff are scheduled for 8 hour shifts between the hours of 7:30 and 5:30 pm. This program follows the Shepherd Public Schools calendar with a few slight variations to accommodate GSRP requirements. Program assistants are generally expected to work year round. Our programs shift to summer programming for 8-9 weeks during the months of June, July, and August.
Daily Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):
- Productive and positive communication with program families.
- Ability to work on a teaching and childcare team.
- Ability to manage a schedule and deadlines.
- Understand licensing rules for the State of Michigan.
- Understand requirements of the Great Start to Readiness Program (GSRP)
- Understand and uphold the standards of WAAC programming.
- Assist in the creation & maintenance of a positive, nurturing, and fun learning environment for children.
- Maintain positive relationships with coworkers.
- Ability to utilize technology such as Google Workspace and Procare.
- Effectively manage the spectrum of behaviors one can encounter when working with children.
- Maintain positive relationships with public school personnel and community partners.
- Physically able to work and play with children indoors or outdoors- including floor play.
- Maintain a clean classroom environment and follow program health guidelines.
- Ability to utilize provided curriculum materials effectively.
- Assess children utilizing the provided tool(s).
- Some evening activities required throughout the year.
- Interest in obtaining a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential
